Factors affecting the rate of diffusion

1.  Temperature - The higher the temperature is increased, the rate of diffusion will increase as
well. This is because when the temperature is raised this causes the cells to gain kinetic energy
which means they will move faster to the area of low concentration. A decrease in temperature
means that the cells will lose energy and therefore not move as fast.

2 Size of particles - The size of a particle affects how fast it will diffuse. A larger particle would
diffuse slower in comparison to a smaller particle. This is because the less mass a particle has
the faster it will move.

3 Concentration - The greater the concentration gradient, the quicker diffusion takes place. This
means that the greater the difference in concentration between the area of high concentration
and the area of low concentration, the quicker the rate of diffusion

4 Distance - The greater the distance the particles have to travel to diffuse the slower the rate of
diffusion will be.

5 Surface area - The greater the surface area is the faster the rate of diffusion will be.

6 Permeability - The more permeable the membrane that the particles are diffusing through to
get to the area of low concentration the faster the rate of diffusion will be. This is because the
easier the particles can move through the membrane to get to the area of low concentration
from the area of high concentration the the faster diffusion will occur.
