STATES OF MATTER
What to do today ?

Diffusion

Factors that affect the Rate of Diffusion

Practice questions
DIFFUSION

Movement of particles from an area of higher to an area of lower

concentration .

Diffusion is fastest in Gases (e.g Perfumes )

(because the attractive forces between particles is minimum and the gas
particles can move in all possible directions )

Diffusion also takes place in liquids ( eg mix Rooh Afza in water )

Rate of diffusion is slower in liquids .
Factors that effect the Rate of
Diffusion
1.Temperature :
► Higher the temperature , faster will be the rate of diffusion because
particles will gain K.E to move from one place to another .

► 2. Concentration : (amount of substance )

More is the amount of the substance , faster will be the rate of diffusion .

► 3. Mr (Relative molecular Mass )

Higher is the relative molecular mass , slower will be the rate of diffusion as
heavy particles diffuse slowly .
( Temperature and Concentration are directly proportional to rate of
diffusion while Mr is inversely proportional )
