Z Test
Q 1. A company markets car tyres. Their lives are normally distributed with a mean of
40000 kms and standard deviation of 3000 kms. A change in the production process is
believed to result in a better product. A test sample of 64 new tyres has a mean life of
41200 kms. Can you conclude that there is no significant difference between the new
product & current one. (Ans: Z=3.2)
Q 2. Random sample of 400 flower stems has an average length of 10 cm. Can this we
regarded as a sample form a large population with mean of 10.2 cm & a s.d. of 2.25 cm?
(Ans: Z= -1.77)
Q 3. A sample of size 400 was drawn & the sample mean was found to be 99. Test whether
this sample could have come from a normal population with mean 100 & variance 64 at 5%
level of significance. (Ans: Z= -2.5)
Q 4. The mean of two large samples of sizes 1000 & 2000 are 67.5 & 68.0 respectively. Test
the equality of means of the two populations each with s.d. 2.5. Assumption should be
stated clearly.(Ans: Z= -5.16)
Q 5. The mean yield of wheat from a district A was 210 kgs with s.d. 10 kgs per acer from a
sample 100 plots in another district B the mean yield was 220 kgs with s.d. 12 kgs from a
sample of 150 plots. Assuming that the s.d. of the yield in the entire state was 11 kgs test
whether there is any significant difference between the mean yield of crops in the two
districts. (Ans: Z= -7.05)
Q 6. A large organization produces electric bulbs in each of its two factories. It is suspected
that the efficiency in the factories is not a like so a test is carried out by ascertaining the
variability of the life of the bulbs produced by each factory. The results are as follows:

From the above information determine whether the difference between the variability of life
of bulbs from each sample is significant take 1% level of significance (Ans: Z=0.98)
Q 7. The mean life time of sample of 100 fluorescent light tubes produced by a company is
computed to be 1570 hrs with a s.d. of 120 hrs. The company claims that the average life of
the tubes produced by the company is 1600 hrs. Using the level of significance of 0.05 is
the claim acceptable. (Ans Z= -2.5)
t Test
Q 8. A machine is designed to produce insulating washers for electrical devices of average
thickness of 0.025 cm. A random sample of 10 washers was found to have an average
thickness of 0.0.24 cm with a s.d. of 0.002 cm. test the significance of the deviation. Value
of t for 9 d.f. at 5% level is 2.262. (Ans: t= -1.5)
Q 9. A soap manufacturing company was distributing a particular brand of soap through a
large no. of retail shops. Before a heavy advertisement campaign the mean sale per week
per shop was 140 dozens. After the campaign a sample of 26 shop was taken & the mean
sales was found to be 147 dozens with s.d. 16. Can you consider the advertisement
effective? (Ans: t=2.19)
Q 10. Certain pesticide is packed into bags by a machine. A random sample of 10 bag is
drawn & their contents are found to weight (in kgs) as follows: 50,49,52,44,45,48,46,
45,49,45. Test the average packing can we taken to be 50 kgs. (Ans t=3.199)

Q 11. 10 students are select at random from a college & their heights are found to be 100,
104, 108, 110, 118, 120, 122, 124, 126, & 128 cms in the height of these data discuss the
suggestion that the mean height of the students of the college is 110 cms.(Use 5% level of
significance. (Ans t= 1.93)
Q 12. The average number of articles produced by two machines per day is 200 & 250 with
s.d. 20 & 25 respectively. On the basis of records of 25 days production. Can you regard
both the machine equally efficient at 1% level of significance? (Ans t= -7.65)
Q 13. Ten workers of a factory are selected at random. The number of units produced by
them on a working day was as follows 71,72,73,75,76,77,78,79,79,80 . On the basis of the
given data is it reasonably correct to say that the mean number of units produced by them
is 78 ( For v = 9 ,t 0.05 = 2.262 )
Q 14. Test were made at short intervals on spark plugs of two manufactures. The following
tabulation gives the numbers of hours of service from plugs from the two sources:

Do these result results indicate a statistically significant difference between spark plugs so
far as the mean length of service is concerned? (Ans t=0.923)
Q 14a. The 9 items of a sample have the following values: 45, 47, 50, 52, 48, 47, 49, 53, 51. Does the
mean of these values differ significantly from the assumed mean 47.5? Ans. tcam = 1.8327

Q 15. A sample analysis of examination results of 500 students was made. It was found
that 220 had failed, 170 had secured a third class, 90 were placed in second class and 20
got a first class . Are these figures commensurate with the general examination result which
is the ratio of 4:3:2:1 for the various categories respectively. Ans. χ 2=23.66

Q 16. 100 students of a management institute obtained the following grades in statistics

Q 17. The following table shows the classification of 4000 workers in a factory, according to

Use χ 2-test of find if there is any evidence to support that there was any association

Q 22. To test the significance of variation in the retail prices of a commodity in three

Q 23. A drug is said to be useful for treatment of cold. In an experiment carried out on 160
persons suffering from cold, half of the persons were treated with the drug and rest of the

between the mean life of the two makes? Ans.Z =- 10.86
Q 30. The mean weekly sales of soap bars in departmental stores were 146.3 bars per store.
After an advertising campaign the mean weekly sales in 22 stores for a typical week
increased to 153.7 and showed a standard deviation of 17.2. Was the advertising campaign
