Q. A sample of 400 male students is found to have a mean height of 171.38


CM. Can it be reasonably regarded as a sample from large population
whose mean height and standard deviation are 171.1 CM and 3.30 CM
respectively? Frame null hypothesis and test it on 5% level of significance.

Q. The mean breaking strength of the cable supplied by a manufacturer is


1800 with a standard deviation of 100. Buy a new technique in the
manufacturing process it is claimed that the breaking strength of the cables
has increased. In order to test this claim a sample of 50 cables is tested. It is
found that the mean breaking strength is 1850. Can we support the claim at
1% level of significance?

Ans : Z = 3.54

Q. The mean height obtained from a random sample of size 100 is 64


inches. The standard deviation of the distribution of height of the
population is known to be 3 inches. Test the statement that mean height of
the population is 67 inches at 5% level of significance. Also set up 99%
limits of the mean height of the population. Calculate range of 95%
confidence limit.

Ans : Z= 10 , 63.2 to 64.8


Q. A sample of 100 tyres is taken from a lot. The mean life of tyres is found
to be 39350 kms with a standard deviation of 3260 kms. Put the sample
come from a population with mean life of 40000 kms ? Test the statement
at one percent level of significance and set up 99% confidence limit within
which the mean life of tyre is expected to lie.

Q. A man buys 50 electric bulbs of Philips and 50 electric bulbs of Bajaj. He

deviation of 60 hours and Bajaj bulbs gave and average life of 1512 hours
with the standard deviation of 80 hours. Is there a significant difference in
the mean life of the two makes of bulbs at one % level of significance?

Q. A sample of the height of 6400 English men has a mean of 67.85 inches
and a standard deviation of 2.56 inches while a sample of height of 1600
Austrians has a mean of 68.55 inches and standard deviation of 2.52 inches.
Do the data indicate that Austrians are on an average taller than English
men at 1 % level of significance ?

Q. Two samples of 100 electric bulbs each has a mean score of 1500 and
1550, standard deviation of 50 and 60. Can it be concluded that these two
brands differ significantly each other at 1% level of significance ?

Q. The manufacturer of a certain make of electric bulbs claims that his bulb
have a mean life of 25 months with a standard deviation of 5 months. A
random sample of 6 bulbs taken an the life of these bulbs in months are 24,

Can you regard the producers claim to be valid at 1% level of significance ?

Q. Random sample of size 16 has 53 as a mean. The sum of square of the


deviations taken from mean is 135. Can this sample be regarded as taken

limits of the mean of the population.

in ice cream made by firm. A sample is taken from each batch and sent to

similar test was given to 12 participants before the course and after the
