Chapter 8
• (10 points) Question 1 : One professor in U of Sask who is interested
in measuring chemical contaminants in Ketchup, selected a random
sample of n = 52 adults. The sample produced an average of x = 212
milligrams per day with a standard deviation of s = 17 milligrams
per day. Based on this sample, construct a 95% confidence interval
for the mean daily intake of chemical contaminants in Ketchup. Then
find 99% CI. Compare to the 95% CI, and justify.
• Solution :

1
• (10 points) Question 2 : A recent study indicated that 38% of 200
women over age of 50, in the study, were unemployed.
1. How large a sample must one take to be 98% confident that the
estimate is within 0.03 of the true proportion of women over 50
who are unemployed?
2. If no estimate of the sample proportion is available, how large
should the sample be?
• Solution :

Chapter 9
• (10 points) Question 3 : An investigator in a pharmaceutical com-
pany, claims that a certain drug dose level can induce sleep for 83%
of people suffering from high “Migraine”. The dosage was prescribed
and examined on 51 patients with “Migraine”, where 31 of them have
had sleep induced by the drug dose.
1. Is there enough evidence to refute the investigator’s claim
at α = 0.01.
2. Re–do part 1 using p–value approach.
• Solution :

3
• (10 points) Question 4 : In a study of the weights of Cod fish, a
bunch of Cod fish was selected randomly in the sea near Halifax.
Their weights are measured (kg) as :

3.11 3.91 3.02 1.89 5.07 4.93 4.54

Is the mean of all Cod fish weights in Atlantic Canada in excess of 4

kg?? Use α = 0.01 and α = 0.05, then compare and justify.
• Solution :

Chapter 10
• (10 points) Question 5 : Is there a significant difference in achieve-
ment measurements between online and classroom courses?? Two
groups are tested, via measurements on Mid exam for STAT 245. The
following table gives a summary of results for two groups of students
:
Online Classroom

Sample Size 39 32

Sample Mean x̄1 = 37.12 x̄2 = 31.92

Sample Standard Deviation s21 = 4.881 s22 = 4.332

Construct a 90% CI for the difference in both student groups

mean results. Can you conclude there is a difference?
• Solution :

5
Chapter 11
• (8 points) Question 6 : In a recent study, two groups of diabetic
patients were asked about their preference for newer oral or injectable
(Insulin) medication. Both groups were of Type 1 and Type 2 dia-
betes. In the first group (Type 1 diabetes), 51 patients preferred to
go with newer oral medication, out of 182 participants. In the second
group (Type 2 diabetes), 101 patients preferred to go with newer oral
medication, out of 241 participants.
1. Construct a 90% CI for the difference in population proportion
preferences for both groups of patients with diabetes.
2. Try again with 95% CI, then compare to Part 1.
• Solution :

6
• (8 points) Question 7 : Vitamin A is most commonly used for treat-
ing vitamin A deficiency. A recent study was conducted on pregnant
women with birth defects (cleft lip, cleft palate, brain, heart, kidneys,
.....), who had exposed to Vitamin A, during the last three months
before giving birth. Two age intervals are involved in the study :
20 ≤ Age < 30 and 30 ≤ Age < 42. The following table gives the
number of birth defect (xi ) out of all births (ni ) :
Age ni xi

20 ≤ Age < 30 317 51

30 ≤ Age < 42 241 62

1. Do above data provide sufficient evidence that there is a differ-

ence in birth defects proportions between both pregnant women
groups?? Use critical value approach. Test using α = 0.01.
2. Do above data provide sufficient evidence that birth defects pro-
portion in pregnant women who are between 20 and 30, is less
than that for women between 30 and 42?? Use critical value and
p–value approaches. Test using α = 0.01.

Chapter 12
• (14 points) Question 8 : In a recent study (2020), 24 cases of COVID–
19, were asked about number of days they needed to recover. All cases
were distributed over three groups : cases who were diagnosed with
COVID–19 in April 2020, or August 2020, or December 2020. Patients
were requested to report the number of days they need to recover.
1. Construct ANOVA table (put the table, fill it, and show all tech-
nical and computational details under the table).
2. At α = 0.05, can one conclude that there is a difference in
the means of days of recovery for the three groups?
3. Find a 99% confidence interval for the average days of recovery
for patients who had COVID–19 during April 2020.
4. Find 99% confidence interval for the average days of recovery for
patients who had COVID–19 during August 2020 versus Decem-
ber 2020.

• (14 points) Question 9 : Osteosarcoma is one of the very malig-
nant types of cancer in which the cancerous tumor occurs in a bone.
Patients are often treated with one of the following four options :
“Surgery”, “Chemotherapy”, “Radiation Therapy”, and “Amputa-
tion”. In a recent study, patients with Osteosarcoma were asked
to evaluate their body functional results and possible complications,
three months after finishing treatment program. For each patient, the
score was out of 20 (the higher indicates the better).
1. Construct ANOVA table (put the table, fill it, and show all tech-
nical and computational details under the table).
2. At α = 0.01, can one conclude that these four methods of
treating Osteosarcoma differ?
3. Find a 95% confidence interval for the average evaluation estimate
for patients who went with “Amputation”.
4. Find 95% confidence interval for the average evaluation estimate
for patients who went with “Chemotherapy” versus “Radiation
Therapy”.
The following data, is about all patient responses (out of 20) for four
different types of treatment :

Question 10 (General)
• (3 points) In sample size determination,

z2σ2
n= 2 ,
E
doubling the standard deviation results in :
(A) doubling the sample size.
(B) quadrupling the sample size.
(C) increasing sample size eight times.
(D) No effect because E will increase.
• (3 points) If 95% CI for µ1 − µ2 in two population means includes zero
value, then Ho in

H0 : µ1 − µ2 = 0 vs H1 : µ1 − µ2 > 0

must be :
(A) rejected.
(B) accepted.
(C) rejected or accepted based on the length of the 95%.
(D) ignored, since there no association in between 95% and the hy-
pothesis decision.
