Q1. Why did Walt and Madge have to work so hard to win over the dog?
• Walt and Madge had to work hard to win over the dog because when he had arrived ,he proved
to be very unsociable, he had disliked all their efforts and had refused to let them touch him.

Q2. In what way did Walt ensure that the dog had to be returned to him whenever he ran away?
• In order to ensure that the dog was returned to him whenever he ran away, Walt got a metal
plate on which it was written “ Return to Walt Irvine, Glen Ellen, Sonoma County, California”,
and attached it to a collar which was strapped around the dog’s neck.

Q.5 He lifted one of Wolf’s forelegs and examined the footpads. Who is he? From Wolf’s
behaviour in the past do you think that the dog would have let any stranger touch him like this?
Why or why not?
• He refers to Skiff Miller. No, the dog was very unsociable and did not let anyone touch him.
He often snarled and growled whenever anyone touched him.

Q.6 The man was evidently a humourist. What made Madge think this way about Skiff Miller?
Was he really making a joke? Give reason for your answer.
• Madge thought that Skiff Miller is a humourist because she felt that its been barely five
minutes that he had met Wolf and he was making a statement that he had heard Wolf bark for
the first time. Yes, he was making a joke because Wolf was his dog and he thought by then
Madge and Walt might have guessed it.

Q.7 This was a new way of looking at it and Miller was clearly debating about it in his mind.
What was it? What do you think was going on in Skiff Miller’s mind? Why was he debating the
matter?
• It here refers to the choice given to the dog of letting him decide where to live.
Skiff Miller was thinking whether it would be right to take the dog away with him or to let the
dog decide where it wants to stay. He was debating this because somewhere in his mind he was
unsure that what would the dog decide.

• Q.8 Do you think the dog tried to tell Skiff, Madge and Walt to stay together? What makes you say
so?
Yes, the dog clearly tried to tell Skiff Miller , Madge and Walt to stay together.
When Skiff Miller was leaving, the dog sprang on him, overtook him, caught his hand between his
teeth, and tried to stop him.
When he did not listen, the dog went back to Walt Irvine’s place, caught his coat sleeve and tried
vainly to drag him after the retreating man.
He then turned his attention to Madge. He snuggled his head in her lap, nudging her arm with his
nose.

• Q.9 Did the dog make a firm decision in the end? How do you know?
When Skiff Miller was going , the dog tried his best to stop him but of no avail. Failing at it ,he again
went back to Walt and Madge. He caught the sleeve of Walt and tried to drag him. Next he snuggled
in the lap of Madge asking her to stop Miller. Yes, the dog made a firm decision of going behind Skiff
Miller as it is clear from the words “ he had made up his mind” and “ not once did he turn his head.”
