BRIEFLY EXPLAIN HOW YOU WOULD EVALUATE REFERENCE MATERIALS

Reference materials or reference sources contain facts that have been brought together from many
sources and organized for quick and easy use. Reference materials are prepared for

specific audiences for specific purposes. One needs to therefore assess each reference work according
to one's information needs. The following principles are applicable in evaluating every reference work
are often stated in the publication's introduction. For example, when checking a dictionary, its power,
currency and fedelity are important, because dictionaries tend to be prepared for a specific
congregation such as age group, students of a subject area or it also perform a specific purposes. Also
dictionary help as to very spellings, syllabication or pronunciation and to check on usage.

Therefore, it is important to evaluate the degree to which a dictionary has succeeded in fulfilling its
purpose. Some of the reference materials that are used to evaluate are as follow;

 Authoritativeness of the authors, editors, or contributors qualifications. An author or something


that has an authority on a topic is often considered highly reliable and also trust to have the
proper knowledge. The reputation of the publisher is also important.
 The date and edition of the publication that is the date associated with the issuing of a
document.
 The scop of the work . The preface introduces the authors to the reader and gives reason for
writing the book, the intended audience and explains the arrangements, symbols and
abbreviations as well as any special features used. The scop of the materials includes the
languages, time and geographical. The relevance will know who is the intended audience is it
general or scholars and is the materials appropriate and useful for your purposes.
 Comprehensiveness in relation to depth or maximum coverage of the topics or issues discussed
in relation to the intended audience.
 Accuracy refers to the reality of the facts relevant to the subject. Accuracy is how the
information was presented, is it paragraph or opinions.
