Reference materials or reference sources contain facts that have been brought together from many
sources and organized for quick and easy use. Reference materials are prepared for
specific audiences for specific purposes. One needs to therefore assess each reference work according
to one's information needs. The following principles are applicable in evaluating every reference work
are often stated in the publication's introduction. For example, when checking a dictionary, its power,
currency and fedelity are important, because dictionaries tend to be prepared for a specific
congregation such as age group, students of a subject area or it also perform a specific purposes. Also
dictionary help as to very spellings, syllabication or pronunciation and to check on usage.
Therefore, it is important to evaluate the degree to which a dictionary has succeeded in fulfilling its
purpose. Some of the reference materials that are used to evaluate are as follow;
