Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced

others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.

An example of a time when I took initiative in a group event would be my sailboating trip during

my internship over the summer. In the trip, we were tasked in helping the captain and his crew go

out into the ocean a couple miles out and back. Other than the captain and crew, it was us interns

and the supervisors from the company we were working with. I have a deep fear of the ocean, as

I am not the best swimmer, so deciding to go on this trip was a way for me to push myself.

Despite my fear however, I did my best to encourage the other interns and always asked how

they were doing. It was easy to tell who was struggling, whether it was because of sea sickness

or learning how to properly knot the sails while the boat was rocking heavily. I was always

putting myself out there and asking crew members if there was anything they needed help with,

and if they needed a number of people, I would ask other interns to see who wanted to help.

After volunteering a lot, I had gotten a good grasp on how to do the specific knots for different

parts of the ship, as well as the commands to let the captain know that we were ready. I was then

able to help others when they struggled with a knot, and guided them through the process so that

they could do it by themselves. The climax of the trip for me was when we got the opportunity to

go out on the () (the pole extending over the water). I was absolutely terrified, but I saw that one

of my co-workers was doing even worse. To help them out, I continually communicated with
them to keep their mind off the ocean directly below us, and always helped them in securing

their safety harness onto the boat. I value this experience as it helped me realize my

communication style with others and showed me how I take initiative in events that cause stress.
