• We use linking words to join ideas together when we’re talking or writing.
Sometimes we want to link two ideas that are di erent from each other or
we want to link one idea to another one that is surprising or unexpected
(2 opposite sentences)

Linkers of Contrast
To show something in contrast, we can use the words however, although, even though, in spite of, or despite.
Example:
It is raining.
He goes to the tennis court.
He goes to the tennis court although it is raining.
Although it is raining, he goes to the tennis court.
• I tried to lift the box, but it was too heavy for me.
• I tried to lift the box. However, it was too heavy for me.
• I like the sour taste, but I don’t like kiwi.
