LESSON 2

1.Give the reasons of studying literature

2.Differentiate the two classifications of literature based on

unit of expression and literary genre

For us to understand better ,and appreciate more the literature that we have, we need to know the
reasons why we study it. In this way, background knowledge is enriched and clearer understanding is

manifested. According to Kahayon(1989), through studying literature, we are able to appreciate the

cultures and beliefs of other people. The activities of people would best speak their way of life.

Distinct culture and beliefs of people could be manifested in the songs they sing, in the stories they tell,
and the tradition they believe. On the otherhand, it is also a way to have a glimpse of the past and be
able to connect at the present. We may not have lived in the past , but through literature, we are able
to feel the battles they fought ,and the victories they celebrated.

Likewise, Caplan L. ( ) also mentioned several reasons of studying literature. To present some, she
stated that literature would allow us to have a self introspection, seeing ourselves from within. It also
allows us to see other peoples perspectives, moving out from ourselves. In this way, we become empha

thetic. We are able to make ourselves a part of others. We feel sad to the misfortune of others, and we
are happy for others victory. Therefore, studying literature makes us more humane. It makes us
appreciate our culture, understand our nature as a person, and see the beauty of everything around us.

CLASSIFICATION OF LITERATURE

Literature can be classified into two categories. We have the prose and poetry. Prose and poetry have
its own characteristics. The unit of expression used in prose is sentence, while poetry uses line or verse.

Putting sentences together to express ideas is called paragraph. While line or verse together is called
stanza.
