● PMDC motors are used in several applications ranging from fractions to

several hp. Some of the applications of PMDC motors are listed below:
○ PMDC motors are used in automobiles to operate wind-shield
wipers and washers, to raise and lower the windows, to drive the
blowers for heaters & air conditioners.
○ PMDC motors are used in computer drives.
○ Used in portable vacuum cleaners.
○ Used in food mixers.
○ Also used in portable electric tools such as drills, saws, trimmers,
etc.
● Self Excited DC Motors
● In case of self excited DC motor, the field winding is connected either in
series or in parallel or partly in series, partly in parallel to the armature
winding. Based on this, self excited DC Motors can be classified as:

○ Shunt wound DC motor

○ Series wound DC motor
○ Compound wound DC motor
● Shunt Wound DC Motor
● In a shunt wound DC motor, the field and armature windings are
connected parallel to each other; this exposes the field winding to
terminal voltage. Though the supply is the same, the current for the field
and armature windings is different. The speed of a shunt DC motor is
constant and does not deviate with varying mechanical loads.

● With low starting torque and constant speed, shunt wound DC motors
are used in applications where good speed regulation is needed with
varying loads, such as grinding machines and lathes. Another common
use for shunt wound motors are processes that require constant tension,
such as printing and winding

● Series Wound DC Motor

● The field and armature winding on a series DC motor are connected to
the power supply in a series. The same current flows in the field and
armature windings. A series wound motor can work with AC and DC
