• What were some of the major groups that immigrated to the United States from about
1840-1917?

The major groups that immigrated to the United States from about 1840-1917 were
Germans, Irish, Jews from Eastern Europe, and Italians. Other immigrants also
arrived during this time, including those from Greece, Hungary, China, and Mexico.

• In what ways did these immigrants face prejudice?

These immigrants faced prejudice in several ways. Firstly, they were often called
cruel names or mistreated by Americans. Secondly, some Americans were worried
about the size and diversity of the new foreign population. Thirdly, most people in
the United States were Protestants and they were often prejudiced against Catholics
and Jews. Fourthly, there was prejudice against new immigrants who spoke
different languages and had unfamiliar customs, different foods, and clothes. Lastly,
many Americans were afraid that with all these immigrants coming over, they
would lose their jobs, as the immigrants were willing to work for less money.

• What were some of the reasons for the prejudice these immigrants faced?
There were several reasons for the prejudice faced by immigrants during this time.
Firstly, some Americans were worried about the size and diversity of the new
foreign population as millions of immigrants arrived during this time, almost 30
million of them, and most crowded into cities in the eastern and northern parts of
the United States. Secondly, many immigrants faced prejudice because of their
different religious beliefs, as most people in the United States were Protestants and
were often prejudiced against Catholics and Jews. Thirdly, there was prejudice
against new immigrants who spoke different languages and had unfamiliar customs
such as different foods and clothes. Fourthly, many Americans were afraid that
immigrants wouldn't share their democratic values. Lastly, many Americans were
afraid that with all these immigrants coming over, they would lose their jobs as
immigrants were seen as a threat to the American way of life.

• The United States needed a lot of workers at this time in its history. Why?
The United States needed a lot of workers at this time in its history because cities
and industries were growing, and a lot of people were moving West. The country
needed a large number of new workers to support this expansion. Many of these
new workers were immigrants who made important and lasting contributions to the
development of the country.

• What are some of the contributions that these immigrant groups made to the United
States?
• Some of the contributions that these immigrant groups made to the
United States include:
• Germans: They became farmers and made important improvements
to U.S. farming methods. They also worked as millers, bakers, and butchers.
• Irish: They helped build the infrastructure of many American cities,
including canals, bridges, railroads, seaports, and roads. Many were skilled
workers like plumbers, while others were unskilled factory workers.
• Jews: Many became involved in popular music and entertainment,
and were also important to the development of American education and
science. Many also worked in the clothing industry.
• Italians: Like the Irish, they were important in the construction
industry and in the building of roads, canals, bridges, buildings, and railroads.
• Overall, immigrants brought languages, foods, music, religious beliefs,
and different lifestyles to the US, and made important contributions to the economy
and culture of the United States.
