Tailor your CV

Adapt your language to what you know about the

company's culture and the kind of candidate they're
seeking, while still being authentic about your true
identity.

Emphasise key words

Companies are now using automatic tracking systems to

sift through CVs. This screens for key words that match
the job description or advert. Read the job posting
carefully, check if it’s customers or clients, staff or
colleagues, and integrate the right keywords into your CV.

Quantify your accomplishments

Every contribution you made in previous jobs is likely to

have had an impact on both the company and its people.
Draw out how you improved procedures, drove
engagement, cut costs, won awards or brought in new
business. Better yet, quantify these with a number.

Use action words

As you're describing your accomplishments, start each

bullet point with a strong verb. This makes you sound
dynamic, outcome focused and makes your CV more
interesting to read.

Be concise

Recruiting managers have less than half a minute to read

and sift through CVs. Do them a favour be concise. Avoid
repetition or jargon. Keep your sentences short. If in
doubt cut it out!

Proof read, then proof read again

Print out a copy of your CV to proofread. Check for

formatting inconsistencies and read it backwards word by
word. Get a fresh pair of eyes to check it over. They may
spot typos that have become invisible to you.
