TEACHING POINT: Past Simple tense - Introduce Irregular Verbs

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: At the end of the lesson students should be able to:

• know the correct form of an irregular verb in the past simple.


• differentiate between irregular and regular verbs

• Form affirmative sentences

VOCABULARY AND PRONUNCIATION:

Irregular verbs:

Go – went Do - did
Come – came Read - read
Have - had Swim - swam
Begin - began Speak - spoke
Eat - ate Tell - told

Students may have problems with the difference between a regular an irregular verb.

Warm Up: Review of the (-ed)

Step one: Introduce Irregular

board to show them the
difference. Practice pronunciation
of each verb aloud.

Step two: Arrange students into 20’ STS – T To reinforce the new
small groups. Mix up the verb T- STS topic
cards with irregular verbs in
infinitive and irregular verbs in
the past simple and give them.
*The cards of the irregular verbs
in past will have a help because
this is the first time they are
working with this.
Students must find and match the
past form or infinitive form of
that verb with their classmates.
After, elicit students to write in
the blackboard their matches and
make them to pronounce the verb.
Once finished all the cards, teach
the meaning of each verb and
their correct pronunciation.
Step three: Activity. Give them 20’ STS – T To practice the new
copies with activities of T – STS topic
affirmative sentences in past
simple using irregular verbs.
Then tell them to read aloud their
sentences. Make everyone one
read at least one sentence.
Wrap up: Put the poster of the 10’ T – STS To conclude the

give them time to think and find
irregular verbs in past. Elicit them
to mark in the poster all the verbs
they could find.

Example of verbs cards: the help will be the translation in Spanish, just for the irregular verb in
past simple, the irregular verb in infinitive will not have a help.
