Themes in Macbeth

Blood - Once Macbeth and Lady Macbeth embark upon their murderous journey, blood comes
to symbolize their guilt, and they begin to feel that their crimes have stained them in a way that
cannot be washed clean.
Ghosts - We can see the appearance of the ghost as a sign of Macbeth's conscience working.
Although on the surface Macbeth is happy to kill, deep down he is troubled by it. The
appearance of the ghost is evidence of this conscience.
Storms - Throughout the play, whenever the witches appear, there is thunder, rain, or some
kind of bad weather that precedes them. The stormy weather associated with the witches
symbolizes how their powers stir up trouble, incite chaos, and go against the natural order.
