Notes on WVD Planning Sessions 21st February 2023

As usual these notes condense the discussions that took place at two separate
sessions, including the related chats. Ideas, comments and suggestions have been
merged where possible to avoid undue repetition, and for that reason are generally
not attributed to particular individuals.

Local Ambassador Programme

Katrina Ramage briefly updated us on progress. The first few Local Ambassadors (LAs)
are in the process of being appointed in Brazil, India and Indonesia.
Anyone who is already involved in WVD can apply to be a Local Ambassador or can
suggest potential Local Ambassadors. The LAs are welcome from any country and they
will be free to operate in the best way that suits their particular skills and background.
Ann Teed had some ideas for the US and asked for further information, as did one or
two others.
We have also begun to look for Schools Ambassadors to help spread the word on our
Schools Programme and other initiatives for children and young people. Initial targets
are in Canada, South Africa, US and Australia, with other countries to follow.
Katrina Ramage (in New Zealand) is leading on this supported by Minal Kering (in
India). Let us know if you would like to become a Local or Schools Ambassador or to
suggest someone else who might be interested at info@worldvaluesday.com

Theme for World Values Day 2023 will be: “Values Bring Us Together”
This theme reflects the general view at the last Planning Session that there should be
some continuity with the previous two years themes and still be around ideas of
togetherness, connecting, community and so on, while also reflecting positivity, and
action/impact.
Now that the new theme has been confirmed, we can begin work on updating our
resources on the WVD website and our social channels. With our now “all-year-round”
social media strategy this clearly needs to be done earlier than in the past.

Social Media
Anna McAfee and Janic Gorayeb updated us on implementation of our new strategy,
which involves maintaining our channels much more actively through the year and also
building up our presence on LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube while maintaining our
presence on Twitter and Facebook. We also aim to make more use of the content we
have from previous years, and are looking to develop more content from around the
world. The YouTube channel will be upgraded and made more attractive and user-
friendly to showcase old as well as new content..
Anna and Janic asked us all to make sure we follow WVD on all our social media
channels (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and our YouTube channel, and to
please engage with our content as much as possible through comments, reposts,
shares etc, rather than just likes.
Can we give also them ideas for postings, content that we’d like them to post about, or
suggestions of any kind.
They asked us to invite our networks to follow the WVD page on Linkedin:
https://www.linkedin.com/company/worldvaluesday/. You can invite 50 of your
connections to follow the page each month. This is really easy to do and open to
anyone to do. We’d love all of you to do it when you have a spare couple of minutes
(seriously, this is all it takes). It’s something we can all do.

When you are on this page just click on the “More” button near the top of the page and
you will see on the dropdown menu “Invite Connections”. If you click on that, the rest is
fairly straightforward. You’ll see a list appear with all your connections on it, which you
can scroll down and tick up to 50 of them to follow WVD. If you need any more guidance
see Anna’s short explanatory video: WVD Page Invites - YouTube

Discussion: How can we reach out beyond our bubble?

We had productive discussions in both sessions on how we can reach out more to
people/organisations that don’t know about World Values Day and maybe don’t spend
much time thinking about values.

Values-based organisations that probably haven’t yet heard about WVD: a number of
these were mentioned specifically, and more generally youth-based organisations,
teaching unions, leadership networks and groups, faith groups, project-management
groups, schools and youth groups were all mentioned. It was suggested that we
consider an email marketing campaign (which takes relatively less time and effort to
execute) rather than rely on connecting though social media and using personal
connections. We should draw up a new target list of potential organisational and group
supporters and then devise a systematic programme to connect with them. Any specific
suggestions would be very welcome.

Influencers/nodes – the more influencers/connectors we can identify for our social

media campaign the better – they don’t need to have massive followings but do need to
be sympathetic to our aims. Everyone is asked to think hard about influencers what they
know or are connected to. Suggestions to info@worldvaluesday.com

Traditional media as well as social media can be a major route to reaching people and
organisations that haven’t heard of us. Having an attention-grabbing story to tell is key
here.

Other like-minded campaigns – let’s piggy-back more on other campaigns (offering

reciprocity of course), for instance the wellbeing, digital health, mindfulness area. Also
think about posting in other bigger like-minded LinkedIn groups.
Stories – Stories came up a lot. People’s stories have the biggest impact especially on
those unfamiliar with what we are doing. These could be blogs, short posts, or short
videos. We already have plans for a campaign of short videos to support V20 and this
will continue to be added to through to WVD itself. Stories about how values help us
through difficult times. Sharing stories about people’s experiences of WVD 2022. Stories
about individual organisation’s values in action would also be powerful from supporters
like Wolters Kluwer. Hopefully an interview with Wolters Kluwer can be arranged and/or
some text produced that tells the story of their multi-year involvement with WVD. Action:
Comms Team.

Impact – other than by using stories and individual feedback from WVD participants,
how can we most effectively show WVD’s impact? This is something we are looking at in
our preliminary conversations with potential sponsors, but we need to consider it more
broadly.

Commentary on current issues - we can also comment on selected big current news
stories from a values perspective. Events/incidents that arouse strong emotions like
grief around the world such as the recent earthquakes and other concerning issues.
Responding and commenting also on ‘positive’ current events like big sporting events.

Certificates of participation – these are often very helpful in attracting new support for
campaigns. Is this something to consider?

Local and School Ambassadors – this initiative can help to raise awareness among
those who don’t know about WVD.

Hashtag use – we will be using #WorldValuesDay again this year as our main hashtag
but we should also consider using #ValuesBringUsTogether.

Devise a WVD emoij – this was a very interesting idea. Comms team to consider.

Brochure: the need for a better and updated 1-2 pager introducing WVD was mentioned
by several attendees – Charles Fowler and the comms team undertook to produce this,
probably in different versions for individuals, schools, community groups, organisations
etc

V20 Update

Katrina Ramage updated us on our collaboration with V20 and reported that one of the
V20 India organising team would talk to us about this year’s V20 communique and
summit at the March WVD Planning Session. The V20 summit will be in late July and
the G20 summit in September, which in many ways works better for us, giving us more
opportunities to engage with them through the year.

Valuesthon: Call for Submissions

Charles Fowler asked that those who wanted to organize events for the Valuesthon to
submit their entries earlier than usual because the schedule is now becoming quite
crowded with 47 events last year, especially in the European/East Coast America time
zones. There will be a “first come, first serve” approach so to get your favoured slot
please apply earlier and don’t wait for the final cut-off date of 31 st July.

Please let us know at info@worldvaluesday.com if you have any questions, suggestions

or offers of help or useful contacts.
