EARLY LIFE OF VERGHESE KURIEN:

Verghese kurien was a social entrepreneur whose billion-litre idea changed the whole circle

of dairy farming and become India’s one of the largest rural employment sectors. Mr. Kurien

made India as a world’s largest milk producer. Mr. kurien once said “If we can again create

the environment, the opportunity and the education, our villages will provide a new

generation of leaders who will not only rebuild our cooperative movement, but who will help

us to build a truly great nation”. From his words we can find how dedicated towards the

nation for a major change in youth and people of India.

CHILDHOOD:

Verghese kurien born on November 26th of 1921 at Calicut, Madras presidency, British India,

now it is known as Kozhikode, Kerala state India. He belongs to an Anglican Syrian

Christian Family. Where his father Dr. P.K. Kurien was a successful Civil surgeon and

mother was an extraordinary piano player.

EDUCATION:

Mr. Kurien did his schooling in Diamond Jubilee higher Secondary School,

Gobichettipalyam in Coimbatore district now it has been changed as Erode district of Tamil

Nadu. In 1940, at the age of 14, Varghese kurien graduated degree in physical science from

Loyola College affiliated to university of Madras. In 1943 he graduated with bachelor’s

degree in mechanical engineering from engineering college of Guindy which is a part of

Madras University. Mr. kurien wanted to be an engineer in army but after his father death his

uncle become guardian and take care of him. On his uncle’s recommendation who was the
director of tatas Varghese kurien joined Tata Steel Technical Institute, Jamshedpur. Later to

escape from his uncle’s creep ideas kurien left out to join and study dairy engineering with

scholarship provided by Indian government. Even though one of his uncles who is the finance

minister, rejected the application and sent him to the Imperial Institute of Animal husbandry

in Bangalore which is now probably known as National Dairy Research Institute of

Bangalore. He spent 9 months and later sent to America on government scholarship to study

at Michigan State University. He did his masters in metallurgy which is major speculation in

mechanical engineering and also a minor in nuclear physics in 1948. Later he has been sent to

Australia to learn the dairy farming and setting up the Amul dairy
