READING TEXT 1
BEHIND BARS AT THE ZOO
1 It was in 1826 that the Zoological Society was founded in
London. In 1847, the word zoo was first used. Later on, in 1892, the Englishman
Henry Salt, in his book Animals’ Rights, was one of the first to protest against
keeping animals in cages. He did not like the way the animals were confined in
cages and the way animals in zoos lose their “character”. Since then, many
people have criticized zoos for these reasons. However, zoos claim that their role
is to educate the public and conserve animals. These aims are not bad in
themselves. It is the way in which they are carried out that we must consider.
2 Zoos claim that they have an important educational function. Is this true?
In reality, most people go to zoos for entertainment. This is what sells the tickets
and pays the bills. Zoos say they give people the opportunity to see the wonders
of nature and its wild animals. In fact, they are showing us animals that have lost
their dignity: animals with sad and empty eyes. The conditions under which animals are kept
in zoos change their behavior. Animals, like humans, are affected by their environment.
3 After months and years in a cage, animals begin to lose their natural characteristics.
Many animals in zoos get signs of zoochosis, abnormal behavior, which includes endlessly
pacing up and down and rocking from side to side. It is caused by lack of space, lack of
company, lack of enrichment, and an unsuitable diet. Two polar bears in the Bristol Zoo in
England were confined in a small area for 28 years and showed all the signs of zoochosis.
How can people observe wild animals under such conditions and believe that they are being
educated? To learn about wild animals, one must observe them in the wild where they live.
4 Zoos also claim that they are conserving endangered species in the hope of returning
them to the wild in the future. Out of about 10,000 zoos that exist around the world, only a
small number register their animals with an international species database, and only a small
percent of those zoos actually work with endangered species.
5 Zoos have projects where they breed animals in zoos for the purpose of conservation.
However, most animals do not need help in breeding; they have been doing it for a long time
without help. Animals have been endangered because humans have destroyed their natural
surroundings. One example was the golden lion tamarin, a species of monkey that had
almost become extinct because humans destroyed its natural habitat, and too many were
captured for pets and zoos. Over 100
tamarins were bred in zoos, and when
they were released into the wild, less
than half survived. Some were unable
to live in the wild – they were not able
to climb trees, or when they did, they
fell off; some did not even move; some
were not used to a natural diet. It is a
risky business to reintroduce zoo-bred

6
animals to the wild, because if they have lost their instinct for survival and cannot adapt
quickly enough, they will die.
6 In conclusion, it seems that zoos are trying to fulfil their goals to educate and
conserve but in the process are harming the animals themselves. What is the solution, then?
One solution is to protect the natural homes or habitats of animals. Another possibility is to
have habitat preserves where wild animals live with the least possible human interference. If
the money and expertise that zoos are using today were redirected to habitat preservation
and management, we would not have the problems of having to conserve species whose
natural homes have disappeared. Without a doubt, there has to be an international effort to
control pollution of habitats and the illegal capturing of endangered species.

Driving an Okada in Lagos

1 Lagos is an enormous city with over

15 million people at the last count.
Getting around the city can be a
problem. One solution is to take an okada, a motorcycle taxi. The name came from Okada
Airlines, which used to fly between cities in Nigeria. It was not comfortable, but it was
popular. The planes usually got to places more or less on time. When the first motorcycle
taxis appeared in the late 1980s, some of the drivers started using that name. They liked to
think they were flying over the roads. The airline stopped flying, but people continued to use
the name for the motorcycle taxis. Now there are many thousands of okadas in Lagos, as
well as in other Nigerian cities.
2 The okada drivers are all young men. They usually have little education or training. If they
were not driving an okada, they would probably be jobless. As okada drivers, they can at
least earn a living. There is plenty of work for all of them. However, they are never able to
save much money because of all their expenses. The biggest expense is the rent for their
motorcycles. These days, it is possible to buy Chinese motorcycles quite cheaply in Nigeria.
However, they still cost too much for many drivers. They usually have to rent a motorcycle
from a company and the prices are quite low for this.
3 Then there are other expenses. The driver has to pay for gas and repairs to the
motorcycle. Many drivers also have to rent space somewhere for the motorcycles. In Lagos,
things cannot be left outside on the streets at night. Even a locked motorcycle will probably
be gone in the morning. Another expense for the drivers is buying helmets. Two are now
required for each driver-one for him and one for the passenger. A good helmet can cost $25-
50, or several weeks of earnings. Drivers and passengers are fined if they are caught without

8
helmets. Many okada drivers, however, just pretend to wear a helmet. It may really just be a
piece of plastic or an empty gourd (vegetable like a pumpkin).
4 Safety is not a big concern in Lagos, but it should be. The traffic is terrible, with lines of
stopped cars, trucks, and busses that hardly move for hours. This has helped the okada
business, since the motorcycles can usually get around the traffic. But when the traffic is
moving, accidents are more and more common. Almost 70 percent of them involve okadas.
All too often, drivers or passengers are hurt or killed.
5 One reason for all the accidents is poor driving. Nigerian drivers in general do not follow
the rules of the road. The okada drivers are even worse. They drive very fast. And to get
around a traffic jam, they drive through lines of cars, onto sidewalks, or even on the wrong
side of the road. Many Nigerians think the government should make it more difficult for all
drivers, and especially okada drivers, to get a driver's license. They are required to get a
license now, but all they have to do is pay for it. They do not have to take courses in road
safety or have training on the road. In fact, many okada drivers have had very
little experience on motorcycles before they start carrying passengers.
6 Another reason for the accidents is probably the condition of the roads. In
fact, the roads are full of holes, and they are often blocked by broken-down
trucks, parked cars, or outdoor markets. To make matters worse, traffic lights
often do not work.
