IS GOSSIP GOOD?
1
What is gossip? We all know about its negative meanings. But, in the opinion of psychologists, gossip
is informal communication about people. People usually point out or imply their opinions or feelings
about the information, but these do not have to be negative. In fact, one recent study showed that most
gossip is not full of criticism, but is socially interesting and is generally about relationships, personal
experiences and advice.
2
Most people believe that they do not gossip because they see this kind of information as little important.
They have an idea that they spend most of their time talking about important topics, such as business
and politics. According to a research, this is true of men who think they do not gossip but they exchange
information. However, research has shown that two-thirds of all human conversation is gossip, for both
man and woman. Studies also show that, in social situations, men spend 0-5% of the time talking about
serious subjects and they show that they gossip just like women.
Gossip in person or through technology seems to have social and psychological benefits. Research
4
shows that gossip can decrease stress and can help us establish relationships and learn social skills.
Therefore, gossip can be good for you.
