imperialism and colonialism:

Idea of Colonialism and imperialism make the countries more wealth and curial. Great Britain
was one of the world's leading colonial powers. There were 50+ colonies of Britain. Such as, Samoa,
Canada and India. They wanted to make everyone British in the world and wanted to benefit from
their wealth because Englishness is so important for them. Addition, British culture and values were
often imposed on the colonized peoples, and the English language became widespread in many of
the colonies. According to idea of colonialism for British people, they are superior from native land
who needs to be captured. Their intention is to bring them culture and education. British people
think that These are considered as their duty for them. I intent to analyze two poems about the
national approach of the colonialism and imperialism along with Englishness.

Firstly, Rudyard Kipling was British writers who lived in India but, he celebrated British
Empire. He lived in one of the colonies of Britain. So, it is not surprising to see that there are
colonial and national references in The White Man’s Burden by Rudyard Kipling. He was an
Englishman raised in the empire and Englishness is so important for him. In the poem, colonialist
and imperialist ideas are supported by the Nation. In the poem, speaker is considered as people of
Britain, and they give some advices to the British empire in order to sustain their greatness and
bring light to uncivilized person. Namely, speaker addresses the white person who is best in the
world. Speakers suggests that the empire needs to take responsibility to serve their colonizes
because they need to get knowledge by the best men. But the best men should be patient because
they are uneducated. It is hard to teach them because they have no English knowledge. They are
marginalized. Addition, speaker suggest that the empire needs to take responsibility to check their
colonies because they are heathen folly. They need to be controlled by the power and we need to
be good example of Christianity by teaching them religion. And it is also divine duty. Addition,
according to speaker, even if we try to bring them culture and try to give them education, they
resist to get these benefits from white man because they enjoy living in dark. There are so many
criticism about poem because the critics think that the poem and poet is racist.

Other poem that includes imperialist and colonialist ideas is “The Emigrants” by Charles
Mackay. He was Scottish poet. According to speaker, Britain loses her power because her
resources are getting diminish. People cannot live in Britain anymore. According to the speaker,
Britain needs to explore new places in order to make her people comfortable and free. The
speaker says, we are poor and we should go the richer countries to enrich ourselves. However,
speaker says that Britain does not see the problems that her people suffer in the land. In the
poem, Britain is considered as mother for the Britons. And their mother cannot hear the cries of
her children. Their mother cannot see how Poor people suffer. Poor become poorer, rich become
richer. However, Britain cannot do anything about the problems. In the poem, we see the
glorification of the colonialist idea. Whole nation supports the idea of colonialism in order to get
more wealth from colonies.
To sum up, there are glorification of imperialist and colonialist idea in both poems. Both
of them support the ideas and gives suggestions about colonialism to the empire because they
think that only salvation is colonialism and imperialism.
Destroying effects of war.
Bohemian life and pessimist mood are basis for 20.cc because of the World Wars. The
wars affected people life because it had destructive effects upon people’s life. About 20 million
people were killed in WWI. And about 20 million people had wounded due to the WWI. There
were also so many people who affected in WWII. About 80 million people had perished in WW2.
WW2 is considered as the bloodiest war our history. Side effects of war are reflected also in the
literature. During the 20 cc, destruction effects of war had inspired writers. Their aim is to
memory the deaths. Beside the pessimism, Stoicism, which means enduring the pain of life and
believing in fate, was also main inspiration for the writers.

Firstly, I intent to analyze “Anthem for Doomed Youth” by Wilfred Owen. Owen is
English poet and soldier. He wrote something about war’s effects in his poems. His poems are
about horrors of warfare like “Anthem for Doomed Youth” and he was killed in the war . He has
witnessed the terrible effects of the war at firsthand. Wilfred Owen’s “Anthem for Doomed Youth”
is about wastefulness of the War and it shows destruction effects of the war to the readers. The
poem is about the tragedy of young soldiers who died in battle. The poem is also lament for them.
Speakers depicts fighting soldier in the war as cattle which is considered as submissive animal. It
means that soldier dies in vain. They are like animals. They are killed for their country, but the
country does not memory them properly. Instead of hearing the prayers for themselves, young
soldier who was dead only hears sounds of gun. Speakers wants to say that funerals of the young
soldiers are lack of mourners, religious rituals. Addition, according to the speaker, death soldiers
need to be honored to rest in peace. Briefly, futility and wastefulness of the war were depicted by
Owen. It is an elegy for memorial of the death soldier.
Secondly, I intent to analyze Thomas Hardy “Channel Firing”. "Channel Firing" is a poem by
Thomas Hardy about the horror and destruction of war. In the poem, speaker is death soldier. Death
soldier wakes up because of the loud sounds of the gun, fire but he assumes that apocalypse has
begun. But god says that no! this is not apocalypse. Living soldier has been practicing murdering each
other. And god also says that nothing is changed in the world ever since you left in the world. Only
thing that has changed is that war is more devastated and bloodier now. Countries still make war
and mad leaders do nothing for the sake of Christian values. Addition, God also says that if it had
been apocalypse, I would have sent them to hell immediately for the all destruction they've caused
on Earth. Addition, the death people question that the world will ever be less crazy or not and we
witness some regrets of death people in the poem. A death person who is priest for 40 years says
that I wished I’d smoked and drunk because the life is wasteful to do some good. There is a
religious doubt because Hardy’s approach is like god’s being helpless, cynical. Therefore, god
is not taken seriously. The poem uses satiric tone to criticize destroying affects of war and its
wastefulness.
Addition, "Vergissmeinnicht" was written by Keith Douglas. He was one of the most
celebrated poets of WWII. He was British. He was poet and soldier during the WW II So, he
had witnessed the terrible sides of the war at first hand. Also, he was killed in the invasion of
Normandy. In the poem, speaker is British soldier. The soldier comes back to the battle field
and he encounters with German soldier who is about to decay under the sun. Speaker
remembers German soldier who hits British tanks with gun. The speaker depicts the
battlefield as nightmare. Also, speaker depicts the rotting soldier as demon because he fights
against them. The speaker also finds a photograph that belongs to lover of German soldier
who is Steffi. Vergissmeinnich is written down in the photo. It means that forget me not. The
British soldier finds the photo and its meaning more emotional. However, he cannot see the
face of German soldier with sympathy because they think that he deserves to die. The
reason is that he is their enemy and once German soldier wanted to kill them. In this part of
the poem, we see the dilemma of the British soldier because it is hard to say something good
against their enemy, and also it is hard to say bad thing against him because he finds the
photo so emotional. Once British solider sees him as demon, now German soldier turns into
humanbeing for them. Addition, speaker says that if his lover had seen his rotted body which
black flies swarms over his body, he would have weep until she dies. But he suggests that
there is always a winner in the battle. And the war does not care how much people suffer.
Addition speaker says that even if the dead people leave this mortal land, the rest who is
their relatives also go with them. In the poem, we see the destructive effects of war for dead
people’s relative.

Theme of Death

Firstly, I intent to analyze “Do not Go Gentle into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas. Dylan
Thomas was reporter at first, but then, he wrote poems about social and intellectual discussion. His
themes are universal like death, unity of all life and process of life. The poem is about old age. the
massage of the poem is that we need to be ready for foreseeable death. Also, the poem suggests
that we need to show our will, rage and passion to resist death as long as it is possible. Namely,
the poem suggests that people should not calmly and peacefully welcome death. The poem depicts
four types of people who are wise, good, wild, and grave men, and aim is to show how they do not
welcome death gently even if they have different type of personalities. Wise menwho are old know
that death is inevitable for them, but they do not say anything to the world about death not to
leave people in shock. They simply refuse to accept death peacefully. Addition, Good men do not
accept death gently by showing their rage to it. Moreover, wild men who enjoyed their life until
their death learn that death is also inevitable for them. But it is too late to realize it, so they also
do not go gently to death. Lastly, Grave men who are sick and nearest to death, realize that life is
about to end for them. Also they see that even blind man can see the light like meteors at the edge
of death. So they try to resist to death. Dylan writes the poem for his father. In last stanza, he
wants to say that Father! Rage, burn, and fight with death, but do not go gentle into death. Briefly,
the aim is to say that Life is precious and life is rare. We should not accept the death easily.
