Egypt had great kingdoms thousands of years ago. Egyptian kings were called pharaohs. We know much
about them. One reason is because we have paintings of them. These old pictures are not like photos today.
They look very different.
Artists then did not paint any way they liked. Art in old Egypt was very formal. That is, it had special ways to
show things. Animals and people, for example, were shown in profile. The pictures were very detailed. From
the pictures, we can even tell what kind of dogs Egyptians had. Birds in pictures from old Egypt are very
detailed, too. One strange detail in the art of old Egypt is the human eye. Egyptian artists painted people’s
eyes very big. They also put a dark outline around the eye.
The art of old Egypt reached its highest point between 3,000 and 3,500 years ago. Some of the most famous
works of Egyptian art were made during this time. Then it declined. As we find tombs from old Egypt, we
learn more about its art.
