Last month my family and I went to Toraja to attend grandpa’s funeral. It was my first time to go to
such a ceremony. We gathered there with our kind in the ceremony.
Overall, the ceremony was quite elaborate. It took about a week. Several days, before the ceremony
was done, grandpa’s body was kept in a series of houses arranged in a circular row around an open
field called tongkonan. His Corpse was dressed in a fine wearing.
The funeral was performed in two phases. First, we slaughtered the pigs and the buffaloes and then
move the corpse to face north. In this ceremony we wore black clothes. After that, the corpse was
placed in a sandal wood coffin. Then, it was brought out of the house and placed on an open platform
beneath the granary.
Meanwhile, my uncles, my brother and I prepared the wooden puppet and a funeral tower called
lakian. The next phase of the ceremony was held in this place. The coffin is born from the house and
placed in the lakian. During the day, there were also buffalo matches. They were great matches. In the
night, we were feasting, chanting, and dancing

THE LEGEND OF MALIN KUNDANG
A long time ago, in a small village near the beach in west Sumatra lived a women and her son,
Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang and his mother had to live hard because his father has passed away
when he was baby. Malin Kundang was healthy, diligent and strong boy. He usually went to the sea to
catch fish. After getting fish he would bring it to his mother, or sell the caught fish in the town.
One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing he saw a merchant’s ship being raided by a band of
pirates. With his bravery, Malin Kundang helped the merchant defeat the pirates. To thank him, the
merchant allowed Malin Kundang to sail with him. Malin Kundang agreed in the hope to get a better
life. He left his mother alone.
Many year later, Malin Kundang became wealthy. He had a huge ship and a lot of crews who
worked loading trading goods. He was also married to a beautiful woman. When he was sailing on his
trading journey, his ship landed on a coast near a small village. The local people recognized that it was
Malin Kundang, a boy from the area. The news run fast in the town; “Malin Kundang has become rich
and now he is here”.
An old woman, who was Malin Kundang’s mother; run to the beach to meet the new rich
merchant. She wanted to hug him to release her sadness of being lonely after a long time. When his
mother came near him, Malin Kundang who was with his beautiful wife and his ship crew denied that
she was his mother. She had pleaded Malin Kundang to look at her and admit that she was her mother.
But he kept refusing to do it and yelling at her. At last Malin Kundang said to her “ Enough, old
women! I have never had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly women!” After that he ordered his crews
to set sail to leave the woman who was then full of sadness and anger. Finally feeling enraged, she
cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if he didn’t apologize to her. Malin Kundang just
laughed and set sail. Suddenly a thunder storm came in the quite sea, wrecking his huge ship. He was
thrown out to a small island. It was really too late for him to avoid her curse; he had turned into a stone.

Once upon a time, a cap seller was passing through a jungle. He was dead tired a needed to rest. The
he stopped and spread a cloth under a tree. He placed his bag full of cap near him and lay down with
his cap on his head.
The cap seller had a sound sleep for one hour. When he woke up, the first thing he did was to look
into his bag. He was startled when he found all his caps were gone. He was wondering where they
could have gone. Indeed, hews greatly puzzled.
When he looked up, he was surprise to see monkeys sitting on the brances of a tree, its wearing a cap
on its head. They had evidently done it to imitiate him.
He decided to get his Cap back by making a humble request to the monkeys. In return, the
monkeys only made a faces at him. When he began to make a gestures, even when he raise has fist
towards them, also imitate him.

At last he hit upon a clever idea. “ Monkey are great imitators,” he thought. So, he took off his own
cap and threw it down on the ground. As he had expected, all the monkey took off the cap and threw
them down on the ground. Quickly, he stood up and gather the caps, put them back into his bag and
went away.
