MID SEMESTER EXAMINATION :(M.Tech/MS/PhD)
Course : MM 5340 SURFACE ENGINEERING

Roll Number: Date : 07-03-2022

Time: 17:00-18:00

Marks : 35
ANSWERS MUST BE TO THE POINT

1. Why steels are preferred for surface hardening rather than stainless steels? (1)

2. What specific advantages does LASER hardening have as compared to EB hardening? (2)

3. Describe three property differences between Cold spray and Flame spraying? (2)

4. Detonation sprayed coatings exhibit higher high cycle fatigue life as compared to Air Plasma (2)
Coatings. Can you explain why?

5. Can you coat hard materials (like ceramic materials) on metal substrate? If so, how? If not, why?.
Explain with examples (2)

6. What is non-transferred spray process and explain the working principle. How it is different from
other coating process. Discuss briefly the classification and their specific advantages. Give (5)
suitable example.

7. (a) In an electric arc spraying, there is no external heat sources. Is it so. Explain. (2)

(b). What specific advantages does HVAF have as compared to other combustion spray process. (2)

8. Frequencies of 100 to 400kHz produce relatively high energy heat ideal for quickly heating small
parts or the surface of large parts. For deep penetrating heat longer heating cycles at 5 to 30kHz
will be most effective. How? (3)

9. Imagine that you are working for a company which wants to improve the wear resistance of steam
turbine blades of length 100cm without change of dimension. Suggest a suitable surface
engineering treatment that you can apply to harden the surface. What factors affect this choice?
(4)
10. Choose any one of the following coating processes, outline : (i) the type(s) of material to which
it is likely to be applied (ii) the details of the process with illustration (iii) the depth and degree of
hardening likely to be achieved (iv) possible applications (v) advantages and disadvantages. (10)
(a) D-Gun or (ii) Induction hardening or (iii) Cold spraying
