A language is an indicator to showcase a social background because of its

features which can be used as basis in studying sociolinguistics. Sociolinguists have
developed a number of ways of categorizing languages, according to their status and
social functions. The distinction between a vernacular language and a standard
language is a useful place to start.

Vernacular is a language or diale nct spoken by the ordinary people of a country

or region, furthermore, this language or dialect is spoken in a particular country or
region.

Labov’s vernacularity and sociolinguistic change by Nikolas Coupland points out

vernacular is systematic; and it represents speaking in the least monitored condition.
Vernacular is the way of speaking that matter for the study of language and is relevant
on sociolinguistics.

As an opposition to standard language, it is proposed that vernacular should be

understood as an idealization of ordinary language. With this, vernacularity is based on
what sociolinguistics it is positioned such as the change in the level of vernacularity or
even in the language depending on social class. It is stated on this paper that
vernacular languages lack connotations.

The two concepts I do not understand is the standardization in language and the
“how discipline might handle change based on social ang linguistic process.

As per the insights; how vernacularity changes over time and standardization in a
language.

What is the approach in studying vernacularity?

Elite language?
Linguistic standardization?
