History of Filipiniana and High school ball

HIGHSCHOOL PROM | HIGHSCHOOL

BALL
A promenade dance, also known as a prom in American English, is a high school dance party.
For boys, it may be offered in semi-formal black tie or informal suit, and for girls, it may be
offered in evening gowns. This event usually takes place near the end of the school year.
Individual junior (11th grade) and senior (12th grade) proms may be held, or they may be
combined.

A "prom king" and "prom queen" may be revealed at a prom. These are honorary titles
bestowed upon students who were elected in a school-wide vote prior to prom. Other
students may be selected to serve on a prom court. A prom court is chosen in the same way
as a homecoming queen/princess, king/prince, and court. Inclusion on a prom court may
reflect a student's popularity and level of participation in school activities such as clubs or
sports. Crowns may be given to the prom queen and king. Prom court members may be
given sashes to wear and photographed together.

Similar events, which may be inspired locally by debutante balls, take place in many other
parts of the world. In Canada, the terms "formal" and "Grad" are frequently used, whereas
in Australia and New Zealand, the terms school formal and ball are most commonly used for
occasions equivalent to the American prom, and the event is usually held for students in
Year 12, though the bestowing of the regal titles does not occur. Many schools hold a formal
graduation ball for graduating students at the end of the year instead of or in addition to a
formal. A debutante ball, also known as a debs, may be held in Ireland. In Poland and
Lithuania, high schools organize a "studniówka" (lt. "imtadienis"). The term "prom" has
become overused. Because of the influence of American films and television shows such as
Grease, the term "prom" has become more common in the United Kingdom and Canada.
This event is commonly referred to as a matric dance in South Africa because students in
their 12th year of school are referred to as matric students.

There is some variation between dialects in terms of whether prom is used with or without
the definite article—for example, whether one says "go to prom" or "go to prom" .

Promenade dance is a dance party for high school students, typically held near the end of
the school year. It may include the use of "prom king" and "prom queen" as honorary titles
awarded to students elected in a school-wide vote. The selection method for a prom court is
similar to that of homecoming queen/princess, king/prince, and court. The prom queen and
prom king may be given crowns to wear and photographed together. Variation exists
between different dialects with regard to whether prom is used with the definite article or
not.

In Ireland, a debutante ball or debs may also be held. In South Africa, it is widely known as a
matric dance as students in their 12th year of school are called matric students.

History

The nighttime dance served a function similar to a debutante ball in the early days of high
school proms. Early proms were filled with firsts: the first adult social event for teenagers,
the first time driving the family car after dark, the first real dress-up event, and so on. Proms
also served as a heavily documented event, similar to a milestone event such as first
communion or a wedding, in which the participants were embarking on a new stage in their
lives. Previously, the prom may have also served as an engagement announcement for the
"best couple" after the prom court was crowned and recognized.

Attire

Regardless of the time of year, boys typically dress in black or white formal wear, sometimes
paired with ties or bow ties with vests, in some cases in colors matching their date's dress.
The majority are rented from formal wear rental stores.

Girls dress in traditional ladies' dresses or evening gowns and accessorize with ladies' jewelry
like earrings and a necklace. Girls traditionally wear perfume and cosmetics such as
eyeshadow, lipstick, and blush. Girls also wear corsages that their dates give them, and girls
give boys matching boutonnières to wear on their lapels. Some couples want to match the
color of their date's dress to the color of their tie or suit.
IMPORTANCE
A junior-senior prom is an excellent opportunity for upperclassmen to practice their social
skills outside of the classroom. They must consider the social implications of inviting a
partner to the dance or making plans with friends to attend as a group. Students frequently
learn how to make dinner reservations, buy and size formal wear, and plan transportation
for the evening. Some people will purchase a corsage or boutonniere for their date. Juniors
and seniors practice formal dining etiquette in restaurants and learn how to budget for such
a large, costly event.

FILIPINIANA | MARIA CLARA

Filipiniana attire is a traditional dress that gave Filipino women a sense of identity. It is
identified by its puffy butterfly sleeves, plain blouse, long skirt, and pañuelo (a square of
cloth used as a head covering or worn as a scarf around the neck).

It is only fitting that the Filipiniana, the elegant and modest Filipina of the day, wore a
beautiful dress. Tatler delves deeper into its history in this article.

The Maria Clara gown, terno, or Filipiniana attire, played an important role in the culture of
the country. Many history books and museum archives show that the dress provided a sense
of identity for many Filipino women.

The Filipiniana is a traditional dress with puffy butterfly sleeves, a plain blouse (baro or
camisa), a long skirt (saya), and a pauelo (a square of cloth worn as a head covering or as a
scarf around the neck) worn over the shoulders.

A baro or camisa is a collarless blouse made of flimsy and translucent fabrics; saya, on the
other hand, is a long skirt that begins at the waist and ends at the floor and is typically made
of double sheets called dos paos (two cloths); and pauelo, a cloth used to cover the nape and
upper body to show modesty.
