Letter 4: CSFB or Circuit Switched FallBack.
✔️CSFB, or Circuit Switched Fallback, is a mechanism used in LTE networks to support voice and SMS
services for devices that do not have native support for Voice over LTE (VoLTE).
✔️CSFB Architecture:
CSFB is a mechanism that allows LTE devices to fallback to a circuit-switched network (such as 2G or
3G) to make or receive voice and SMS services. The architecture of CSFB includes three key elements:
🔹LTE eNodeB (eNB): The eNB is responsible for handling the LTE data traffic and signaling. When a
CSFB-capable device initiates a voice or SMS service, the eNB initiates the CSFB procedure to transfer
the call to the circuit-switched network.
🔹Circuit-switched network: The circuit-switched network provides the voice and SMS services using
technologies such as 2G or 3G. When the CSFB procedure is triggered, the circuit-switched network
takes over the call.
🔹Mobile Switching Center (MSC): The MSC is responsible for routing voice and SMS traffic in the
circuit-switched network.
🔹Step 1: The user initiates a voice or SMS service on their LTE device.
🔹Step 2: The eNB detects that the device is CSFB-capable and initiates the CSFB procedure.
🔹Step 3: The eNB sends a CSFB request message to the device, asking it to switch to the circuit-
switched network.
🔹Step 4: The device switches to the circuit-switched network and establishes a connection with the
MSC.
🔹Step 6: The circuit-switched network establishes a connection between the calling and called
parties.
🔹Helps operators to save on the cost of deploying a separate voice network for LTE.
To summarize, CSFB is a critical mechanism that allows LTE devices to fallback to a circuit-switched
network to access voice and SMS services. Its architecture, call flow, and benefits make it an essential
component of LTE networks, enabling operators to provide high-quality voice and SMS services to
their customers.
