Introduction to Maritime Transport

In the Philippines maritime transport covers boat houses, boat and maritime traditions. Traditionally
made of wood selected by elders and handicraftsmen, these structures were used to be the principal vehicles
of people and connected an island with an island where seas and rivers were the roads of people. Although
ships in the archipelago have been believed to have been in use for millennial following human arrivals via
water, the earliest evidence that shipbuilding and the use of ships is still dated 320 AD by the carbon date of
the Butouan ships which have been identified as giant balangay remnants. Besides the Balangay, the
Philippines is home to many styles and varieties of indigenous sea vessels, such as the two-mast double-
outrigger armadahan, the Avang trading boat, the dugout canoes awang, the Balación, the big sailing boat,
the bangka, the small canoe bangka anac-anak, and the basnigan salambáw, as the small double-out rising
boat.
Maritime transport in the Philippines includes boat houses, boat-making, and maritime traditions. These
structures, traditionally made of wood chosen by elders and crafts folks , we re used as the main vehicles of
the people , connecting one is land to another, where the seas and rivers became the people's roads.
Although boats are believed to have been used in the archipelago for thousands of years since the arrival of
humans through water, the earliest evidence of boat-making and the usage of boats in the country continues
to be dated as 320 AD through the carbon-dating of the Butuan boats that are identified as remains of a
gigantic balangay.
