I would like to thank God for keeping me patient and focused while
doing this SBA. Secondly I would like to thank my teacher(s) and my
parents for being patient. I would also like to thank my group members
for helping me meet all the necessary expectations for this SBA.
Plan of Investigation

My English School Based Assessment (SBA) is centered on the topic

‘Slavery’ which was derived from my group’s overarching topic ‘Low
self-esteem’. This topic was chosen because children of African descent
tend to have low self-esteem. As an English student this research will
enhance understanding and comprehending skills, improve the
researcher's speech by identifying the writer’s technique in presenting
the issue and identifying main ideas. These skills will be used in the SBA
to give the readers a better understanding of what low self esteem and
slavery really is.
To complete my SBA, I will collect information from an Article, a Song
and a Movie.
Reflections

It has become the norm for individuals in today's society to speak about
‘Slavery’. I myself tend to speak on this topic a lot because it’s an
interesting one. I am interested in why the Africans believed what was
said to them and how the Europeans were able to manipulate them
into getting onto those ships and also what life was like on the
plantations. I finally found three artifacts that have given me a better
understanding of ‘Slavery’.
The first artifact is entitled ‘West Africa’ , an article posted by
Liverpool museums. This artifact edified me about what Africa was like
before European slavery and the capture and sale of enslaved Africans.
The second artifact chosen was a song entitled ‘Stand Up’ by Cynthia
Erivo. This artifact taught me about what life was like on the plantation
and how a family and a few other slaves were saved by their daughter
and a friend.
The third artifact chosen was a movie entitled ‘I am a slave’ this artifact
gave me the researcher a brief understanding of how slaves were
caught and placed on the ships

Low self-esteem is one of the biggest problems people face in

today’s society, mainly teenagers. Everyone lacks confidence
occasionally but people with low self-esteem are unhappy or
unsatisfied with themselves most of the time. It takes attention and
daily practice to boost a low self-esteem.

Slavery was a pivotal historical period for black people. The struggle for
freedom and for recognition weakened black individuals mentally,
physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Black men and women were
legally prevented from receiving any form of education, which made
them more vulnerable to accepting the negative stereotypes about
them and to recognizing white people as superior.

The sub-topic I chose to investigate intrigued me as I was amazed by

the myriad of explanations made by movie producers, Journalists and
songwriters. I was able to narrow my investigation to three artifacts
that I deemed worthy for the completion of my research. With the
conduction of this research I am now more adept in speaking and
writing English.
Group Written Report

This SBA began when our teacher clarified the different sections of the
assessment which once we grasped our overarching topic and
subtopics were chosen. During the selection of topics, we experienced
difficulties choosing suitable artifacts.
This assessment was centered on the topic ‘low self-esteem’ from
which the individual topics were derived: Sexuality in the school
environment, Slavery, Impacts of low self-esteem in disabled persons,
Body shaming and the effects of bad grades on secondary school
students. Three artefacts were selected based on their relativeness to
the overreaching topic ‘Low self-esteem’. The artefacts selected was a
novel, interview and a visual video which all displayed acts of low self-
esteem.
Our first artefact is a novel written by Kody Kiplinger, 23, has turned an
insulting acronym into a sassy and smart cliché-buster. The Kentucky-
bred author’s 2010 YA novel the DUFF was selected as an artefact
because this novel proves that low self-esteem relates to persons of all
sizes.
Our second artefact was an interview which took place on the 5 th of
June 2022 by a researcher on a relative who wished to remain
anonymous. This was based on an interview with someone who has
experienced low self-esteem for his uncontrollable birth condition
(disability) even by his own family. This artefact proves that one’s
condition doesn’t stop anyone from being affected by low self-esteem.
Our final artefact is a YouTube video on Low self-esteem by Dr.William
Winter, child and adolescent psychiatry May 9th, 2011.
https;//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gfq4hHLvOPY&t=94s. This
artefact not only speaks on the negative effects of low self-esteem on
bad grades but it also spoke about how low self-esteem can affect
someone.
Finally, we kept requesting help from our teacher since we didn't fully
understand the concepts or what the SBA should entail. Once we found
our topics we did individual research to find evidence for our artifacts.
The artifacts found were very informative and also helped in improving
our grammar and vocabulary. Outcomes of the research were very
positive as grammar; writing and reading and comprehension skills
were stressed and improved with the help of teachers and also
classmates. Our objective was met and we were able to complete the
SBA in the time allotted to us. We selected information based on its
connection to our theme and subtopics.

Oral Presentation

This presentation is centered on the topic "Slavery" which is derived

from my groups overarching topic "Low self esteem"
Persons of African descent are known to have low self esteem due to
society constantly hammering the fact that their skin and hair are
different.
Hi everyone, my name is Afeni and I am diagnosed with severe
depression due to low self-esteem. I work for a rich business man
named Sullivan as the house help but not by choice, I was brought from
Kenya a few years ago by boat. So, I'm basically a slave in modern times
and that's Where my depression and low self-esteem started. My
owner constantly reminds me that I'll be nothing in this life and my skin
looks like mud, my hair is too short and hard to ever be classified as
beautiful.
Slavery was a pivotal historical period for black people. The struggle for
freedom and for recognition weakened black individuals mentally,
physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Where I grew up people of
colour were legally prevented from receiving any form of education,
which made us more vulnerable.

My self-worth stemmed from the work I could do for my masters.

Which made me more vulnerable to accepting the negative stereotypes
about me and to recognizing white people as superior. During this time,
laws were enforced that permitted white slave owners to execute their
power through physical abuse.
I am so ashamed of my blackness.Dehumanizing me to a “rag doll”
makes it easier to feed me a narrative that fosters more self-hatred and
more acceptance of white supremacy. The intent of racism against
people of my kind is to destroy our soul and self-esteem in order to
prevent people like me from recognizing and activating the power
within ourselves...
The struggle to reach my full potential and to thrive still exists but I
won't prove my master and his people right for matter of fact I tend to
prove him wrong and show him that I can amount to something I can
be called beautiful, my skin is like chocolate and not mud and that I AM
A HUMAN!
