He shakes his head. The old woman looks incredibly sad.
He looks at a REAL ESTATE FLYER in his bag and grabs it.
GORDON
What am I talking about? There is

He holds it out, not really expecting her to take it.
OLD WOMAN
Would you mind? My eyes...
GORDON
Sure.
Gordon sits on the steps. She sits in a rocker. He

So it’s like that. All right.
He draws the fishing pole with a bone on the end of the
fishing line, dangles it over the fence.
SPIKE goes nuts, leaping and YAPPING at the bone, which
Gordon keeps just out of his reach. With the dog focused
on that, Gordon slips the gate open with his other hand.
Gordon leads the dog out the gate, does a quick
bullfighter move, goes in the gate, slams it, and pulls

STEPHANIE
(upset)
Oh no, I can’t believe it. This is
terrible! All the roads are
blocked. I don’t know when I’m
going to get home.
GORDON
You don’t know when you’re getting
home?! What do you mean? Where
are you?
STEPHANIE
In Colorado.
GORDON
You’re still in Colorado?!
STEPHANIE
(freaked out) *
I know, this is really bad. Maybe *
I should have James stay with *
Ricky. *
GORDON *
Are you kidding? No. No. You *
don’t got to do that. We’re fine. *
James and me are tight. He’s *
hanging with me at work, we went *
to the park and threw a frisbee *
around. Met these two nice mute *
women. *
His gaze settles on James and he smiles, surprised at the *
truth in his statement. *
GORDON (CONT’D) *
You just get here when you get *

Stephanie relaxes. *
STEPHANIE *
Are you sure? *
GORDON *
Yeah baby, I’m sure. *
Stephanie sighs, relieved, and sits on a rock. *

GORDON *
Yeah, well... *
STEPHANIE *
Gordon? ... I feel bad for asking, *
but the thing is that James *
sometimes has trouble sleeping *
because of the mucus buildup in *
his nose. Would you mind taking a *
peak and helping him? *
GORDON *
He can’t blow his own nose?! *
STEPHANIE *
Well, he can, it’s just sometimes *
he doesn’t get it all out. Can I *
speak to him? *
Gordon sighs and calls out to James.
GORDON
Your momma wants you.
James reaches for the phone. Gordon holds it back.
GORDON (CONT'D)
Not so fast. Are we friends or
aren’t we? Nothing about the d-o-
g. And you could give Gordon some
props.
Gordon gives James the phone and watches him, concerned
about what he’ll say. STAY ON JAMES.
JAMES
Hi, Mom... Yes... Yes... No...
Yes...
Gordon gives James a look, what’s up?
JAMES (CONT'D)
Dinner was good. Gordon gave me
something from every food group.

CASSAVETTES *

MURDOCH

He’s only eaten one cup of Kibbles

CASSAVETTES
The dog? You came to talk about
the dog?
MURDOCH
(paces, worried)
He’s always been a good eater.
Just like me. Even when he was a
puppy.
She notices something dangling around Murdoch’s neck.
CASSAVETTES
Are you... wearing his dog tags?
MURDOCH
He’s my partner! I miss him!
We’ve never been apart this long!
CASSAVETTES
(a beat)
Murdoch, this is... not healthy. I
want you to fly up there, check on
him and get this out of your
system.
MURDOCH
Really? That’s great Cassavettes.
He shakes her hand vigorously. She forces a smile.
CASSAVETTES

GORDON
There’s the dog! That’s the dog.
COP 1
Son, is this your father?
James is watching, unsure what to say.

Cop 2 whacks Gordon with the nightstick. Ow!
COP 2

JAMES
No.

He whacks Gordon again. Ow!

That’s Gordon. He lives here.
The Cops look at each other. Cop 2 puts his nightstick

COP 2

JAMES

GORDON
I didn’t have mommy either.
JAMES
You didn’t have a mommy?
James looks sad for Gordon.
GORDON
Hey, it’s cool. Look at Spot. He
doesn’t have a daddy or a mommy.
He’s a stray, but he’s happy.
Spot watches Gordon, stoic, a blank expression on his
face.
GORDON (CONT'D)
Alright, he’s a little screwed up,
but he’s basically okay. And
you’ll be okay, too. I mean look
at the Beaver. He had that whole
happy family thing and what did he
end up doing? Sticking up dry
cleaners. Or was it that
Partridge kid? I’m off the point.
The point is Spot’s happy ‘cause
he knows how to be okay on his
own. He does what he wants. What
I’m saying is... if you’re like
Spot, whatever happens, you just
roll with it.
James thinks for a minute, then looks up at Gordon.
JAMES

Benny runs after them.
BENNY

GINO
Right. He did find a family to
hide him out. But Billy loved his
musical theatre. He had to go.
It was in his nature.
ARLISS
So we popped him at My Fair Lady.
GINO
Exactly. Now this dog’s as smart
as Billy--maybe smarter--but he’s
a dog and dogs don’t like to be
cooped up. He’ll surface. And
when he does, we got him.
He finishes tacking up another flyer.
INSERT - FLYER
A “lost dog” flyer, with a picture of Spot, and the words
“Please help find my little girl’s dog. Reward.”
A WOMAN stops to read it.
WOMAN
Oh, that’s so sad.

STARCHILD

GORDON
No kidding? I wanted to be a vet.
STARCHILD
Really? What happened?
GORDON
4-F. Flat feet, it was very
traumatic. Anyway, enough about
me. Is it possible for a dog to
be schizophrenic? What if you had
a dog that never moved or made a
sound, he just sat in one spot and
stared straight ahead. But every
once in a while, he would go
totally buck wild and tear apart
some home furnishings.
STARCHILD
Maybe he's a zen dog.
GORDON
A zen dog. What's that?
STARCHILD
Perhaps he's meditating. Seeking
the inner path to tranquility and
eternal bliss.
GORDON
Then why would he attack the
couch?
STARCHILD
Hey, it’s not an easy path.
GINO AND ARLISS
enter, passing Gordon and Starchild, who don't notice

GINO
Take that side.
Gino walks off. Stay with Arliss as he passes under the

CAUSE PARALYSIS."
James's eyes go wide watching as Gordon jumps out of the
tank, with urchins stuck to his back, ass and legs. He
spins around, pulling them off.

Murdoch pulls Spot over and puts Spot’s electric collar

JAMES
Okay.
James throws mail bags and boxes out the back. As the
bags land they pop open, letters flying into the air and
making the hitmen swerve. A box bounces up and hits the
hitmen’s windshield, making them swerve wildly.
Gordon looks back, sees the bad guys swerve and smiles.
Then he looks ahead. There’s a car! He swerves hard,
skips over a curb and plows into a large shrub.
