SEE SPOT RUN

1 EXT. SEATTLE HARBOR DOCKS - NIGHT 1

UNKNOWN POV - NIGHT VISION GOGGLES

Scanning the docks. Lots of cargo, then... MOB

HENCHMEN. And COLOMBIAN DRUG DEALERS. TWO MEN come into
view, standing between two containers, talking. The VIEW
favors one of them, overcoat on shoulders, leather
gloves. SONNY TALIA. Mob Boss.

VOICE (O.S.)
I’ve got Talia.

The two men move off, OUT OF CAMERA VIEW.

VOICE (O.S., CONT’D) (CONT'D)

I’ve lost them.

A WOMAN’S VOICE (O.S.)

Move in!

2 EXT. THE DOCKS - NIGHT 2

Sonny walks away from some cargo in the b.g., satisfied.

He turns to the other man, the Colombian Boss.

SONNY
Okay. Let’s do this.

Sonny nods to a Henchman, who talks into cell phone, then

nods to Sonny. The Colombian Boss looks to one of his
Men, who holds up a palm computer, checks it. And nods.

COLOMBIAN HENCHMAN
Transfer confirmed.

Floodlights blind them. A voice comes over a megaphone:

VOICE (V.O.)
This is the F.B.I. You are
surrounded! Drop your weapons and
put your hands in the air!

The FBI SWOOPS IN, IN OVERWHELMING FORCE. The Henchmen

look to Sonny and reach for their guns. Sonny shakes his
head. They hold off. A Colombian slips away, unseen.

Surrounded, the Colombians raise their hands. FBI Agent

CASSAVETTES steps up to Sonny. Her regulation FBI
assault gear cannot hide her voluptuous beauty.

CASSAVETTES
Sonny Talia, you’re under arrest.

SONNY
For what, Cassavettes? Import
export?

He reaches into his jacket pocket and several GUNS COCK.

Cool, he pulls out a paper with two fingers.

SONNY (CONT’D)
My bill of lading. Coffee.
Paint. Computer chips. Lawn
chairs.

She looks it over as AGENTS search crates and containers.

FBI AGENT
There’s nothing in here but lawn
chairs.

SONNY
You know, Cassavettes, if you ever
get tired of being an FBI agent,
you can always go to work for me
in one of my dance clubs.

CASSAVETTES
Bring in Agent Eleven.

Sonny’s eyes twitch, just a little. He knows this name.

An armored truck pulls up, headlights cut through the
mist. A combat boot steps out. PAN UP to reveal a big,
muscular, bad ass fed. He opens the back to reveal...

AGENT ELEVEN, a magnificent crime dog. Eleven sits

patiently, statuesque. He and Sonny lock eyes. There's
no love lost between these two.

Murdoch (The Fed) holds up his fist. Eleven goes into a

ready stance. Now Murdoch points at an open container.

MURDOCH
Search!

Agent Eleven heads for an open container car, nowhere

near where Sonny was before. Sonny cracks a smile.

But Agent Eleven notices a few drops of blue paint on the

ground and stops. He touches his paw to the paint, then
looks at it. It’s wet. Sonny’s smile fades.

Their attention riveted, the FBI Agents watch as Agent

Eleven looks around and spots SOME BLUE PAINT ON A
HENCHMAN’S SHOE.
Eleven sniffs, catches the scent he’s looking for. He
runs past loads of cargo. Sonny begins to fidget. Eleven
stops next to a pallet of paint drums. He puts his paws
up on a drum and pushes it over. The lid pops off. Blue
paint gushes across the pier.
Murdoch pulls out plastic bags filled with white powder.
CASSAVETTES
What’s this, Talia? Paint
thinner?
The hiding Colombian is in a loading crane. He flips a
lever, SENDING A CONTAINER CRASHING DOWN. FBI Agents dive
out of the way. IT CRUNCHES THE COLOMBIAN BOSS’S CAR. *
A Colombian grabs an Agent from behind, takes his gun
back. Everyone goes for their guns and dives for cover.
Sonny runs. The FBI is cut off by the container.
MURDOCH
Eleven!
Eleven looks at Murdoch. Murdoch makes a fist. Eleven
does a signature Clint Eastwood-type thing: curls his
lip, a canine version of “Make my day.” Murdoch points
two fingers after Sonny. Eleven charges after him.

4 EXT. DOCK - NIGHT 4

Sonny takes the corner of a building, running fast,
looking back. Suddenly, above him, Agent Eleven bounds
heroically from the roof of a building, onto some crates,
then a fork lift, then to the ground. He runs after
Sonny--
SONNY stops, turns, pulls his gun--
SONNY
Chew on this, mutt.
But before he can fire, Eleven leaps majestically... AND
CHOMPS ON SONNY’S CROTCH.

Sonny sitting against a wall, holding his crotch in pain.
Eleven trots over and drops something at Murdoch’s feet,
OFF CAMERA.
MURDOCH
Whatcha got there boy? ... ooph.
CASSAVETTES
(smiles)
You want us to put that on ice,
Sonny?
Sonny rolls around, moaning and cursing in Italian.

5 INT.\EXT. CAR - MOVING - DAY 5

HIP HOP MUSIC playing on his headphones. TIGHT ON THE
DRIVER through his open window. GORDON SMITH, a shaggy-
haired overgrown kid, head moving to the beat, singing,
wearing a loud PHAT FARM T-shirt.
Then he stops and gets out... PULL BACK to reveal he’s in
a mail truck and wears postal shorts and big black shoes.

8 EXT. SEASIDE COMMUNITY - DAY 8

MUSIC CONTINUES over a suburban neighborhood near the
sea. CRANE DOWN to FIND Gordon delivering mail. He is
wearing headphones, the source of the music.
He goes up a walk. A smiling, half-blind OLD WOMAN in
coke bottle glasses, and wearing ruby red lipstick, is on
the porch. Gordon shouts.
GORDON
GOOD MORNING, MRS. C!
She winces, indicates his headphones. He pulls them off.
He scans her mail before he hands it over.

He shakes his head. The old woman looks incredibly sad.
He looks at a REAL ESTATE FLYER in his bag and grabs it.
GORDON
What am I talking about? There is
a letter.
He holds it out, not really expecting her to take it.
OLD WOMAN
Would you mind? My eyes...
GORDON
Sure.
Gordon sits on the steps. She sits in a rocker. He
pretends to read.
GORDON (CONT'D)
“Dear Grandma. I’m sorry I
haven’t written in so long.
Things are good here in...”
Handwriting’s a little scraggly...
OLD WOMAN
Chicago.
GORDON
Chicago. That’s it.
(looks at woman’s photo on
flyer)
“I started seeing a woman named
Joanne recently--”
OLD WOMAN
That’s odd. He’s a...

Gordon switches in mid-stream, not missing a beat.

9 EXT. MAIL TRUCK - DAY 9

Gordon reloads his bag and glances up at the street sign.
GORDON
Bleeker Street. Dogtown. Canine
Alley.
He slips pads onto his forearms and shins.
SEVERAL SHOTS
Gordon molds hamburger into a ball;
Sticks a slingshot in his belt;
Puts a small toy fishing pole in a sheath on his back;
Straps a water gun onto his thigh.
Gordon looks into the reflective glass on the mail truck
door, sees himself loaded down with weaponry.
GORDON (CONT'D)
You barkin’ at me? You barkin’ at
me? I’m the only mailman here.
He flips his wrist up and an AIRHORN springs out of his
sleeve and into his hand.
CRANE UP as Gordon steps onto canine alley like the
sheriff come back to town. DOGS BARK up and down the
street, a mailman’s nightmare. His gaze settles on:
THE OMINOUS VICTORIAN HOUSE AT THE FAR END OF THE STREET.
Gordon rubs his hands together fast and cracks his neck
to both sides, pumping up.

10 EXT. BLEEKER STREET - DAY 10

Gordon reaches a gate. Behind it is SPIKE, an angry dog.

GORDON
Spike, can’t we do this nice just

(Spike BARKS and SNARLS)
So it’s like that. All right.
He draws the fishing pole with a bone on the end of the
fishing line, dangles it over the fence.
SPIKE goes nuts, leaping and YAPPING at the bone, which
Gordon keeps just out of his reach. With the dog focused
on that, Gordon slips the gate open with his other hand.
Gordon leads the dog out the gate, does a quick
bullfighter move, goes in the gate, slams it, and pulls
the bone away. Now Spike is outside, Gordon inside.
GORDON (CONT’D)
Psyche, Spike!

11 EXT. ANOTHER HOUSE - DAY 11

Gordon drops the mail and heads to the gate to leave,
when the world’s dirtiest dog gets in his way. AND
CHARGES. Gordon whips out the super squirt and fires
behind him as he runs, pumping soapy water at the dog.
The dog chases him around the yard. The tiled walkway
becomes slickened with soapy water. The dog loses
control, sliding ten feet past Gordon, his head pivoting,
snapping at Gordon as it crashes into a trellis.
Gordon makes his escape, takes a breath, and moves on.

12 EXT. ANOTHER HOUSE - DAY 12

He steps through the gate cautiously. His eyes go wide
and he drops. A SMALL DOG flies over him, BOUNCING OFF
THE FENCE. The dog falls, stunned, and bobbles around.
Gordon runs up to the porch and drops the mail. When he
turns, the small dog is charging.
Gordon pulls a burger ball and his slingshot out. SNAP!
IT BREAKS, SNAPPING INTO HIS EYE THROWING HIM BACKWARDS.
He jumps up. THE DOG IS ON HIM. HE DUCKS. IT FLIES OVER
HIM, HITS THE WALL, BOUNCES and slides along the porch.
Gordon runs for the gate. The dog catches up to him and
grabs his shoe in its teeth.

pulls a replacement shoe from his mail bag.

13 EXT. AND YET ANOTHER HOUSE - DAY 13

Gordon approaches THE OMINOUS VICTORIAN. Last house.
He’s scared. He opens it delicately, looks around.
Coast clear, he goes up the walk. At the porch, he looks
around. Still clear. He drops the mail. No dog in
sight, he starts out.
He hears a GROWL and turns. A SAINT BERNARD IS CHARGING.
GORDON
Tyson, no!
Gordon flips his Airhorn can out of his sleeve, BUT IT *
FLIES PAST HIS HAND. Gordon runs, Tyson close on his
heels. He leaps up, grabs a tree branch and lifts
himself out of reach. He sighs, relieved. He hears
FLUTTERING and looks up. A cute bird is lifting his back
feathers. Gordon smiles. THEN IT CRAPS, HITTING HIS
EYE.
Startled, Gordon falls out of the tree. WE HEAR TUSSLING
AS TYSON ATTACKS. Letters fly up INTO FRAME.

14A EXT. STREET CORNER - DAY 14A

Gordon leaves his truck and walks toward a corner mailbox
with aches and pains, clothes all torn up. Then he sees:
BENNY WASHINGTON, co-worker and friend, walking toward
him.
Gordon straightens, achy walk transforming into hip walk,
body language broadcasting that nothing gets to Gordon.
BENNY

snow, nor drooly-mouth mutt shall *

The mailbox opens. There’s a DOG inside the mailbox! It *

Gordon almost jumps out of his skin, falling back. The
dog is a stuffed toy, the BARKING coming from a TAPE DECK
rigged to the door. Benny laughs big time.
GORDON (CONT'D) *
Yeah, very funny. That’s
hysterical.
Benny can’t stop laughing. *
BENNY *

Gordon walks from his parked car toward his apartment
building with the stuffed dog. He drop kicks it once.
Then again. He picks it up, drags it along a fence.
As he reaches his building there’s a trash can. He opens

He brushes it off and takes it inside.

18 INT. GORDON’S BUILDING - DAY 18

Gordon unlocks his apartment and puts his bag inside.
Then goes across the hall and knocks. Checks his breath.
The door swings open, revealing:
RICKY, a handsome police officer in uniform. Hair

Caught off guard seeing Gordon, Stephanie can’t help but

STEPHANIE

GORDON
Hey Steph.
There’s an attraction in the air that Rick isn’t happy

STEPHANIE
Gordon, this isn’t the best time--

There he is. JAMES is Stephanie’s six-year-old. Cute as

STEPHANIE

James comes up to Gordon bashfully. Gordon kneels and
gives him the dog.
GORDON

SONNY
That’s the target. Agent Eleven.
ARLISS
You want we should whack a dog?
What’d he do Sonny? Crap on your

They laugh. Sonny slams his fist down. They stop.
SONNY

Two henchmen share a look. Sonny catches it. They look
away.
SONNY (CONT’D)
I want that dog dead!
GINO
Sonny, we’re pros, how we gonna
hold our heads up if we start
rubbing out pets? We’ve got
reputations--
SONNY
Lemme put it to you this way: If
this dog isn’t dead by Friday, you
two will be. How’s that for
chuckles?
ARLISS
Okay, okay, you’re the boss. But,
uh, do regular fees apply?
Sonny glares at them.
GINO
C’mon.
Gino and Arliss get up to go. Sonny notices a henchman
stealing a look at his crotch.
SONNY
What are you looking at?!
The henchman looks away, scared. Sonny calls after the
exiting Gino and Arliss:
SONNY (CONT’D)
Come Friday, I’ll have either that
dog or you two stuffed and mounted
on my wall!

James starts eating. Gordon beats around the bush.
GORDON (CONT’D)
Yeah, you’re real lucky to have a

She’s a special mom, your mom.

JAMES

Gordon decides to pour himself some cereal with soy milk.
JAMES
And you’re... irr-e-ponstable.

MURDOCH

in a mock-up of a city street. Others attack pop-up
characters: A masked burglar. A hip-hop drug dealer.
Murdoch is still instructing the young Agents. He holds
a metal-studded electric collar and a remote control.
MURDOCH
All canine agents wear an
invisible fence collar which gives
a shock designed to get his
attention. Since we work
exclusively with hand signals, it
is sometimes necessary to prompt
the dog to look back. It causes
serious discomfort, so try not to
use it often. Eleven.
Eleven does not react. He’s looking through the fence.
He cocks his head quizzically.

MURDOCH

SHARP
No harm in that, I guess. It’s

Murdoch reads the tag on the carrier. He turns to Eleven

He looks at her, standing there eagerly. A beat. But he
is looking through her. Oblivious to her desires, he

MURDOCH
I hope they’re putting him through

Cassavettes sighs. Her PHONE RINGS. She answers it.
CASSAVETTES
Cassavettes... What do you mean he *

She hacks on her keyboard. Murdoch listens closely.
CASSAVETTES (CONT’D)
No problem, it wasn’t our dog.
That was just a decoy. Let the *

She hangs up.
MURDOCH

CASSAVETTES
Murdoch, he’s fine, it wasn’t him.
He presses the speaker phone button. She sighs, dials.

61 INT. ALASKA DOG KENNEL - DAY 61

A big, hairy, Yeti-looking man passes cages, answers a
RINGING PHONE on the wall. This is DANVERS. INTERCUT.
DANVERS
FBI substation, Nome.
MURDOCH
Danvers? This is ‘The Tiger.’
DANVERS
Oh, hey Murdoch.
MURDOCH
Don’t say my name, this may not be
a secure line.
DANVERS
Sorry. What’s up, Tigger?
MURDOCH
It’s Tiger. Has the package
arrived?
DANVERS
The package? Oh, you mean the dog
that was being shot at by some
mobster so you sent him up here
for safe keeping? That package?
MURDOCH
Yes.
CASSAVETTES
Danvers, this is Cassavettes. Stop
screwing around. Is he there?
DANVERS
He’s here. You sure this is an
FBI dog? He sure doesn’t look
like much.
MURDOCH
Listen, mister. Eleven is the top
canine agent in America, probably
in the world. He’s a killer.
Danvers leans down and looks in the cage at a tiny, yippy-
looking Chihuahua. The DOG YIPS. Danvers pulls back,
startled.

62 EXT. POST OFFICE - DAY 62

Gordon drives the mail truck in. It’s got a huge dent.
It lists to one side. A tail light bounces on a wire.
He parks. Benny comes over, looking at the truck and
waving Gordon off.
BENNY
Get out of here man, Baker’s
flippin’. Saw you with the kid in
your truck. He sees this and it’s
the private sector for you. *
GORDON *
Oh man, can you cover for me? *
BENNY *
Yeah, I’ll think of something. *
Take the truck with you. *

us.

GINO
I can’t believe we’re doing this.
How am I gonna look Jimmy Tucan in

GINO

Sal’s gonna tell Finger.

Arliss gives Gino the thumbs up. Way to lie.
SONNY

JAMES
I don’t want to leave him here.
GORDON
You don’t want a dog, James.
JAMES
I want Spot!
GORDON
This dog ain’t Spot! He doesn’t

James sniffles, about to cry.

get distemper--I don’t know what
that is, but I know I don’t want

house, not ever.
The three of them start walking toward the shelter again.
JAMES
What will happen to him?
GORDON
He’ll stay here for a couple of

him.
JAMES
What if nobody comes?
GORDON
Somebody will.
JAMES
But what if they don’t? What will
happen to him then?
They stop walking. Gordon looks at Spot, who cocks his
head as if to say, yeah, what then? James’s eyes brim
with tears. Gordon looks at James, looks at the shelter.

He throws the ball. No reaction.
JAMES
Maybe he doesn't know you're a

Gordon gets an inspiration. He reaches out tentatively,
and REMOVES SPOT'S INVISIBLE FENCE COLLAR. SPOT shifts
his body, relieved. FOR THE FIRST TIME HE WAGS HIS TAIL.

First. Steak.
He tilts the plate, holds it up for James to see. He

GORDON (CONT’D)
Preferably a T-bone. Bone in,
marbled with fat to help you grow.
Next, donuts. For fiber. Move
everything around in there. Third
group is your salty snacks,
pretzels, chips, French fries.
French fries can also be counted
as fiber. Any questions?
James is open-mouthed. Gordon glances down at Spot, who

mailmen don’t eat steak!
They tug of war, Gordon’s hands and Spot’s teeth.
James is laughing.
Spot wins, gobbling the steak up. Out of frustration,
Gordon raises his fists at the dog--
GORDON (CONT’D)
Bad dog! Out of the kitchen!
Spot snaps into ready mode as Gordon points across the
room, ACCIDENTALLY POINTING AT BENNY’S COUCH.
SPOT takes it as a ‘search’ order, and dive bombs the
couch, tearing the cushions apart, BARKING. Gordon and
James freeze, staring.
GORDON (CONT'D)
What are you doing? Stop! Stop,
dog!
SPOT RIPS OPEN THE LEATHER. FEATHERS FLY EVERYWHERE.
SPRINGS POP OUT. Gordon grabs onto him, trying to pull
him away, but Spot is 200 pounds of muscle and it’s no
contest. Gordon falls off and watches helpless.
GORDON (CONT’D)
What am I going to tell Benny?

A bus is stuck on the muddy shoulder of a rainy road, men *
wedging wood underneath the wheel. The passengers are *

phone.
STEPHANIE
I’m okay. Slowly making my way
back. How’s James?
GORDON
He’s fine.
STEPHANIE
What’s all that noise?
GORDON
Oh, we’re watching a movie.
‘Lassie.’
He holds the phone out, half covers it, does a voice.
GORDON (CONT'D)
What’s that, Lassie? What’s that,
girl? Little Timmy’s down the
well? Third time this month.
(into phone)
You ever watch this show? You’d
think after a while they’d fill in
that well.
James walks toward Gordon, who holds his palm out, wait.
Spot sees the hand, and stops his search. He sits at
attention.
GORDON (CONT'D)
I swear that dog is retarded.
STEPHANIE
Lassie? She always seemed pretty
smart to me. Did Beverly call

GORDON
You don’t know when you’re getting

STEPHANIE
In Colorado.

Spot WHIMPERS. James is angry.
JAMES
I told you he wouldn’t like that!
GORDON
Yes he does. That’s what that
sound means. Why don’t you go to

James storms into the bedroom.

79 INT. GORDON’S BEDROOM - NIGHT (THREE IN MORNING) 79

Gordon is asleep, with James next to him. WE HEAR WOOF,
WOOF from OFF CAMERA. James rolls over, his hand SMACKS
Gordon’s face. Gordon wakes and notices the woofing.

79A INT. GORDON’S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT 79A

Gordon comes out of the bedroom. Spot is sitting at

GORDON
Don’t complain, it’s your own

You got to pee? Well I’m taking

Gordon turns away. Spot BARKS LOUD. Gordon stops and
sighs. He goes to untie the dog.

80 EXT. GORDON’S BUILDING - NIGHT 80

Gordon waits while Spot pees at a tree. WE HEAR IT. It
goes on a while. And a while longer. And still longer.
Gordon actually falls asleep standing up.
Spot finishes peeing and poops. Then he goes to Gordon
and waits. He brushes against him. Gordon wobbles,
neither falling nor waking up.
Spot goes inside. He looks back at Gordon and sneers.

He backs up to yell for James through the bedroom window.
GORDON
Ohhh boy! Hey! Open the door!
James! Wake up! I got to pee,
let me in!
A NEIGHBOR sticks his head out a window. This is the
same one who saw him acting like a dog.
NEIGHBOR
Shut up down there.
GORDON
Can I use your toilet?
NEIGHBOR
Freak.
The Neighbor slams his window. Gordon heads for the
alley, doing the pee dance, legs crossed, hands over his
crotch. But before he gets there, his left foot almost
lands in Spot’s dog poop. He moves it away--and it goes
into mud instead. He pulls his foot out, but it comes
out without his slipper.
He stands, foot in the air, and loses his balance--
He falls, but catches himself with his face hovering
right over the dog poop. That was close! He stands up,
turns, and his right slipper lands right in the poop.
Yuck! He pulls his foot out of the slipper and backs
away from the poop.
Then he notices a drainpipe going up the wall to his
window. He abandons his slippers and starts to climb.
He reaches the window and reaches over, putting his hand
on the sill. Spot gets up on his hind legs and slams the
window shut on Gordon’s fingers. Gordon screams and
falls back. He grabs the drain pipe. WE HEAR SNAP,
SNAP, SNAP as the strips holding it pop off. Gordon’s
eyes go wide. The drainpipe pulls away from the
building. Gordon’s boxers get caught on a bolt and rip
off as he fall backwards... AND LANDS ON HIS BACK IN THE
POOP. A beat, and the sprinklers go on, drenching him.
He lies there a beat, then gets up, grabs some Posies off *
a bush, and covers his naughty bits, front and back. He *
really needs to go now and runs to the alley. *

other.
He advances on Spot, ready to kill. Spot shifts
uneasily. Uh oh.
James looks at Gordon and laughs. At first Gordon gets
angrier. But James laughs more. He starts belly
laughing.
James can’t stop laughing. Gordon looks at himself. He
can’t help seeing himself the way James does. The whole
thing is insane. He starts laughing, louder and louder
with James.
He goes off to the bathroom, laughing and shaking his
head, and turns on the shower.

81aA INT. GORDON'S BATHROOM - MORNING 81aA

Gordon and James brush their teeth side by side. Spot
comes in and sits, watching them. Gordon and James spit
into the sink simultaneously.
James watches Gordon put gel in his hair and shapes it.
James wets his hair and tries to shape it the same way.
GORDON
That’s all wrong. You got to go
loose and wild. Give yourself
some attitude. The girls dig
that.
Gordon puts gel in James’s hair and shapes it until it
looks a lot like his own.
GORDON (CONT’D)
Now that’s fresh. Look at that.

James looks sad for Gordon.
GORDON
Hey, it’s cool. Look at Spot. He
doesn’t have a daddy or a mommy.
He’s a stray, but he’s happy.
Spot watches Gordon, stoic, a blank expression on his
face.
GORDON (CONT'D)
Alright, he’s a little screwed up,
but he’s basically okay. And
you’ll be okay, too. I mean look
at the Beaver. He had that whole
happy family thing and what did he
end up doing? Sticking up dry
cleaners. Or was it that

The point is Spot’s happy ‘cause
he knows how to be okay on his
own. He does what he wants. What
I’m saying is... if you’re like

roll with it.
James thinks for a minute, then looks up at Gordon.

STARCHILD
Really? What happened?
GORDON
4-F. Flat feet, it was very
traumatic. Anyway, enough about
me. Is it possible for a dog to
be schizophrenic? What if you had
a dog that never moved or made a
sound, he just sat in one spot and
stared straight ahead. But every
once in a while, he would go
totally buck wild and tear apart
some home furnishings.
STARCHILD
Maybe he's a zen dog.
GORDON
A zen dog. What's that?
STARCHILD
Perhaps he's meditating. Seeking
the inner path to tranquility and
eternal bliss.

STARCHILD
Hey, it’s not an easy path.

AT THE BOTTOM OF THE "T"
Gino appears. He spots them. He waves for Arliss, who
runs up. They advance on Spot from behind up the aisle,
both sides of which are filled with fish tanks. Arliss
holds a leash like a garrote. Gino grabs a broom and
lifts it like a bat, about to hit Spot.
Spot turns and sees them. He GROWLS, does his Clint
Eastwood trick, and advances on them. This is more dog
than they bargained for. They back up. James turns as
Spot lunges and snaps at them, BARKING.
Gino swing and misses, SHATTERING a FISH TANK. They
continue the dance, Spot dodging blows and garrote moves
and trying to bite them, Gino shattering tank after tank,
WATER POURING out, exotic fish flopping all around.
JAMES
Hey! You leave Spot alone! Get
away from my dog!
Spot nips Gino in the butt. He falls into Arliss. They
stumble back, turn and run, Spot on their heels.
James starts to follow, but Gordon appears behind him and
surveys the devastation. His cell phone rings, but he
ignores it.
GORDON
Oh no, not again! That crazy dog!

What do you care? You don’t want
me.
CLOSE ON GORDON, realizing James overheard.
GORDON
I’m sorry, James. I didn’t mean

JAMES
Then why did you say that to my

You were right. I was scared.
Sometimes when people feel upset
they act in messed up ways.
JAMES
You miss Spot.
GORDON
Yeah, I guess I do.
(a beat)
I’m glad you stayed with me,
James. You’re my pal. I didn’t
mean what I said. Not even a
little.
(a beat)
Are you going to forgive me?
James puts his hand on Gordon’s back.
JAMES

friends.

So are we going to get Spot?

140 INT. DOG PARK - DAY 140

Gordon and James look up as THE HITMEN SCREECH TO A HALT,
STARING RIGHT AT THEM.
GORDON
Oh my God. It’s those guys.
He picks James up, runs to the mail truck and throws
James onto the soft mail bags, jumps in and takes off.
The henchman spin their car around and chase after them!

JAMES
Okay.
James throws mail bags and boxes out the back. As the
bags land they pop open, letters flying into the air and
making the hitmen swerve. A box bounces up and hits the
hitmen’s windshield, making them swerve wildly.
Gordon looks back, sees the bad guys swerve and smiles.
Then he looks ahead. There’s a car! He swerves hard,
skips over a curb and plows into a large shrub.
They have to abandon the truck. Gordon grabs James under
one arm. His mailbag comes along, tangled in James’s
arm.
Carrying James, Gordon runs between two houses to the
next block. The hitmen abandon their car and chase them.

142 EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DAY 142

Gordon knocks on a door as he runs but no one answers.
GORDON
Hey! Hey! Anybody home?!
HE SPOTS A POLICE CAR at the corner and runs toward it.
But it turns the corner and disappears. THE HITMEN APPEAR
BEHIND THEM coming onto this street.
Gordon looks around. What to do? Then he sees it:
BLEEKER STREET. DOGTOWN. CANINE ALLEY.
Gordon runs onto Bleeker street. The hitmen are gaining.
He leads them through the gauntlet, James under one arm:

143 EXT. SUBURBAN HOME’S YARD - CONTINUOUS 143

Gordon runs through the yard, Arliss and Gino right
behind. Spike charges. Gordon veers, drawing the hitmen
closer to Spike, which attacks, chomping Arliss’s leg!
ARLISS
OW! GET OFF! AHHH!

DIRTY DOG lifts his head. He’s in the compost heap,
covered in wet, putrid garbage. He tears after Gordon
just as Gino comes through the shrubs. The dog and Gino
are running side by side after Gordon. Both realize at
the same moment and look at each other.
Dirty Dog leaps on Gino, smearing his putrescence all
over him as he goes down.
GINO
Uhhhhh!
Arliss comes tearing past, Spike on his heels. Gordon
jumps a small fence into the next yard. Arliss crashes
through the fence, not slowing down.

145 EXT. YET ANOTHER YARD - CONTINUOUS 145

Arliss reaches out to grab Gordon--
SUDDENLY THE JACK RUSSEL TERRIER LEAPS ON HIS BACK, GETS
A CHUNK OF FLESH IN HIS TEETH AND WON’T LET GO. ARLISS
STUMBLES AND REACHES BACK FOR BOODLES--BUT BOODLES IS IN
THAT SPOT YOU CAN’T SCRATCH. Boodles swings wildly with
Arliss, paws spread out, grip too tight to shake loose.
Gordon and James make it to the far fence, but it’s too
high for Gordon to climb with James. Gordon looks back.
Gino tears right for them, LOOKING LIKE A CRAZED ANIMAL.
Gordon sees a hole under the fence. He puts James down.
James scrambles into the hole. Gordon leaps up and over.
BUT JAMES IS STUCK! The mailbag is hooked on the wood.
GINO LEAPS FOR JAMES--

COMES DOWN ON THE BUTTON, CUTTING OFF THE CALL.
PULL WIDER. It’s Sonny Talia.
SONNY

Then he runs off toward the building.

SONNY
I took a wild guess that you two
baboons would screw up.
He puts his gun in his belt, grabs Boodles and yanks.
ARLISS

The ball rolls, Sonny looks down, below his crotch. The
ball rolls through his legs. Then he turns his head to
look. IT’S SPOT, the open bedroom window in the b.g.
JAMES
Spot!
GORDON
(to Sonny)
Maybe you could just play dead.
Spot GROWLS at Sonny.
GORDON (CONT’D)
Nah. Probably wouldn’t work.
Sonny starts to reach for the gun in his belt. Spot
GROWLS louder. Sonny hesitates. Spot gives him the
Clint Eastwood grin. Do you feel lucky?
Sonny Squints. Spot squints. Sonny moves his hand

Sonny goes for it. Spot leaps, chomping Sonny's hand and
knocking him down.
SONNY

THE GUN GOES FLYING over to Arliss, who bobbles it.
MURDOCH
Eleven! The gun!

and SMASHES IT ON GINO’S HEAD, taking him out.
Arliss runs for the door. James stomps on his foot, but
it does nothing. Arliss gets to the door
He opens it to run--AND BOODLES COMES BOUNDING IN.
Arliss turns to run and Boodles LEAPS, SINKING HIS TEETH
INTO THE SAME SPOT HE MUNCHED BEFORE. He does a 360 and
runs back out.

Gordon lets go and walks by James. Murdoch looks at
Spot, his hand still on Spot’s collar. He kneels,
holding on. He talks to Spot like he’s just another
human being.
MURDOCH
Eleven, we’ve been together since
I was a pup--, uh a cadet. These
have been the best years of my
life... But there comes a moment
when every agent has to ask
himself: is this the life for me?
I want you to know that whatever
decision you make... it’s the
right one.
Murdoch lets go of Spot. Spot is free to decide. He
looks at James and Gordon, then at Murdoch and
