The article by Katz and Khan explains the open system approach in organization that

begins in identifying and mapping the repeated cycle input, transformation, output and
renewed input which comprise the organizational pattern. It explains the core of the
organization that have social system that has an organic and social structure. The
organization is viewed to have an open system that share properties in common with all
open systems. These include the importation of energy from the environment, the
through -put or transformation of the imported energy into some product from which is
characteristic of the system, the exporting of that product into the environment, and the
reenergizing of the system from sources in the environment. However, the article further
discussed that by sharing characterized by sharing of characteristics, negative entropy,
feedback, homeostasis differentiation and equifinality.
In my own point of view, the open system is set of organizational interrelated
activities that functions as a whole. What I have in mind is that organization considers
the input- transformative technology output framework where input includes materials,
human, financial and information outputs include the product, profit, behavior and
information. What bridges the two is the transformative technology that facilitates the
organizational system to operate and maintain its activities. The organizations
managers then combined and transform these inputs and return them to the
environment in the form of products, or services, employee behaviors, profit or losses,
and additional information and outputs are products that are sold to the consuming
public. Then the systems receive feedback from the environment from these outputs.
Finally, the information from the company and its operation is also released in the
environment. The environment in turn responds to these outputs and influences future
inputs. I believe when the system is sustainable it helps managers conceptualize the
flow of the various elements of the organization itself as they work together to transform
inputs into outputs through transformative technology.
Overall, I believed that managers can monitor well their resources which are
actually coming from the environment and assure that there is alignment because the
system addresses how the strategic elements align with each other. The beauty of open
system is allowing the environment to influence the input and output to alleviate
negative feedback and make future revisions on the product to attain the organizational
desired outcome.
