The Compass Rose

The Compass Rose is a printable set that the children can use to learn the cardinal
directions of a compass.

Look through all the pages carefully before printing this set. There are a variety of siz-
es, color, black & white, work cards, and control cards. Decide which size, color and
format you wish to use - and then print those pages only.

Children who are non-writers

The labels below can be printed, cut out, and used with the blank work cards.

Children who are writers

Laminate the work cards or insert them into plastic page protectors. The child can
use Dry-Erase markers to fill in the missing labels. When finished the labels can be
erased with a soft cloth for the next child to use.

 These direction cards can be used when introducing a child to the process of using a
compass. Explain that the Earth has a magnetic North Pole. The compass needle always
points towards the Earth’s magnetic North Pole. Once the child has positioned himself
in the position of North, they should lay the “North” card on the floor in front of them.
Have them continue to lay the South, East, and West cards.
