Capacity
1. Record how much liquid is in each of the measuring jugs below. Remember to include the unit of measurement (e.g., mL or L):
a) b) c)

250mL 1900 mL 280 mL

d) e) f)

770 mL 1000 mL / 1 L 530 mL

2. Find a measuring jug or cup at your house – it needs to have measurements on it like the jugs above. Now find 5 different
containers that don’t have measurements on them (e.g. a mug, a Tupperware container, a drink bottle, etc.)

3. Complete the table below by estimating the capacity of each of the containers (i.e. – how much water it will be able to hold when
full), then measuring the actual capacity using your measuring tool. Then work out the difference between your estimate and the
actual capacity. The first one has been done as an example to you:

Container Estimate Capacity Actual Capacity Difference

Sandwich container

200 mL 450mL 450 – 200 = 250mL

Frying pan

600 mL 1L 1000 – 600 = 400 mL

Perfume bottle 250mL 250ml 250 – 250 = 0ml

Jug 800 ml 1L 1000 – 800 = 200ml
