Abstract:
Background: Exposure to blood and body fluids (BBF) has become an increasing concern,
especially for students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our study has two objects: (1)
measure exposure to BBF at Duy Tan University and (2) inspect relative factors influencing
this. Method: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted from January 2021 to
March 2021. We collected 397 medical students and nursing students by multistage stratified
sampling at Duy Tan University, Danang city, Vietnam. This assessment inventory is built
through 3 stages. Results: This study found that the rate of exposure to BBF is 50.9%. The
relative factors influencing exposure to BBF are academic ranks, perceived of self-testing for
antibodies or vaccinations for blood-borne diseases, confidence level to apply learned
knowledge and skills for patients, demand for more opportunities to practice skills on patients
at hospitals. Conclusion: Students must study actively, improve their knowledge, hone their
clinical skills, and make the most of their clinical time in hospitals. University and hospitals
must make regulations that students must test for antibodies and vaccinate against common
infectious diseases.
