Stress is nothing but an imbalance in our homeostasis. Homeostasis is essentially a state of being. There
is such a small domain. This is called the limbic system. The limbic system contains something called the
amygdala.It's like the emotional center of our brain. When something is really stressful, it sends a signal to
the rest of the body. What happens when there is a stressor, like a stressor is something to recognize, the
amygdala gets activated. And if you hit it hard, it can really explode. You can be very
stressed.What happens is that the frontal lobe of the brain collapses. The frontal lobe is responsible for
making good decisions, considering the consequences of actions, rational thinking and all the important
mechanisms. We often call him the CEO of the brain. Now the amygdala sends signals to the autonomic
nervous system. And the autonomic nervous system branches out to the rest of our body.There are
actually two parts of the autonomic nervous system called the stress response. The most important of
these is the sympathetic nervous system. Also called gas pedal. If it hits, it goes into the so-
called. Fight, run or freeze. Another part of the autonomic nervous system is the parasympathetic
response.And it's like a brake. It helps us heal. Helps to calm down. Create a feeling of relaxation. The
sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves are almost yin and yang.When a stressor occurs, the sympathetic
nervous system is activated and fight, flight, or freeze occurs. And the parasympathetic nervous system is
the response that actually shuts down or slows down the sympathetic nervous system so you
can charge, recharge, and relax. We must learn to activate the neural response and calm the sympathetic
nervous system. But that's how the stress response works. It starts in the brain and ends in the nervous
system.We need to be resilient to stressors in order to manage and minimize them, and not chronically
strain our mind, body, and behavior.
