When Jesus heals the sick and drives out evil spirits,
Satan’s dominion is departing and God’s kingdom is
coming (Mt 12:22-29). All Christ’s activity is therefore a
conflict with the Devil (Acts 10:38). God’s Son took flesh
and became man that he might overthrow the power of
the Devil, and bring an end to his works (Heb 2.14f.; I
John 3.8). (5)
“…to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness
to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they
may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among
those who are sanctified by faith in me” (Ac 26:17-18).
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a
tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist an
evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek,
turn the other also… You have heard that it was said, ‘You
shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say
to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who
persecute you, so that you may be children of your
Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil
and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on
the unrighteous” (Mt 5: 38-39, 43-45).
We are to love indiscriminately — like the sun shines and
the rain falls — without any consideration of the merit of
the person we love. This is to be a distinguishing mark of
the “children of [the] Father.” And it centrally includes
expressing Calvary-like love to our worst enemies.
