Course Description
D. C. Circuit: Voltage and current sources, mesh current method, nodal voltage method, Delta-star and Star-
delta transformation, Thevenin’s theorem, Superposition theorem. Norton’s theorem, Maximum power
transfer theorem.
A.C. Circuit: Single phase and three phase A. C. phasor representation, Electrical circuit elements R-L-C,
their physical origin based on electromagnetic and electrostatics, R-L, R-C, R-L-C series circuits, Sinusoidal
steady state: power factor, active and reactive power, Parallel and Series circuits, Delta and star connections,
Line and phase quantities, Single and three phase power measurement.
Introduction to static and rotating machines. Basics of transformers and D.C. Machines.
Types of errors: Gross errors, Systematic errors and random errors, probability of errors, normal distribution
of errors and probable errors, limiting errors.
Measurement of resistance: Measurement of low resistance- Kelvin double bridge. Measurement of medium
resistance- Wheat stone bridge. Measurement of high resistance- Megger.
Scope
• To provide good fundamental concepts of Electrical Engineering.
• To provide the concepts of different techniques to solve a circuit problem.
• To provide the concepts of A.C. and D.C. circuits.
• To provide the basic concepts of Transformer and D.C. Machine.
• To provide the ideas to measure resistances.
• To provide the ideas of errors.
Objectives
➢ At the end of this course, the students will be able to understand what is Electrical Engineering?
➢ At the end of this course, the students will be able to solve any A.C. and D.C. circuit.
➢ At the end of the course, the students will be able to the basics of Transformer and D.C. machine.
➢ At the end of the course, the students will be able to measure any resistance.
