1. What does “100% use of cards“ & optimized reagent consumption mean? Do you consider
this feature as advantage of automated machine for blood banking? Explain your answer
(5pts)
In terms of defining the ‘100% use of cards’, it implies that the machine only uses the
columns needed for testing, This can pierce through one column at a time. Other machines
perform piercings by threes (they pierce 3 columns of the card at a time), this implies that they
can either decide to use the excess columns or they would be wasted since the gel would dry
up if left to sit unused. Furthermore, an optimized reagent consumption means that the
machine would dictate exactly how much of each reagent you would need to use for a specific
number of tests. The machine calculates the volume of reagent you would require to perform
certain tests. This is advantageous to the laboratory since this would minimize the amount of
reagent wasted. This would also prevent any errors that may occur when you add an
inadequate amount of reagent.
2. How can automated machines in blood banking reduce the possibility of errors to ensure
safety throughout processing? (5pts)
Since these machines are fully automated, this would help in negating the possibility
of human errors from happening. The user would simply load the reagents and samples into
the machine, the rest is automatically done by the machine. However, we must always
ensure the proper calibration of the machines when testing. Features such as the probe
impact detector can check whether there is an obstruction, this will then trigger the alarm and
alert the operator. The Wadiana also features Clot Detection which aids in reducing the
occurrence of erroneous results. Lastly, the machine captures a photo of the gel card for the
operator to view and review and validate the results.
3. Give the difference between the two machines using the following tabular format. (14pts)
List of techniques:
→ Full ABO/Rh blood group typing

→ Rh + Kell phenotype - Weak D

→ Unexpected antibody screening
→ Identification of unexpected
antibodies
→ Enzyme assays

→ Determination of special
antigens - Self diagnostic
