3.Complete the following text with the words given. (shipbuilding, slipways, maintained,
fragmented, evolution, associated, interchangeably, drydock, shipbreaking, constructed)

A shipyard (also called a dockyard) is a place where ships are built and repaired. These can

be yachts, military vessels, cruise liners or other cargo or passenger ships. Dockyards are
sometimes more …………….. with maintenance and basing activities than shipyards, which are
sometimes associated more with initial construction. The terms are routinely used
………………., in part because the …………….. of dockyards and shipyards has often caused them
to change or merge roles. Countries with large shipbuilding industries
include Australia,Brazil, China, Croatia,Denmark,Finland, France,Germany,India,Ireland, Italy,
Japan, the Netherlands, Norway,
the Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, Ukraine,
the UK, the US and Vietnam. The ………………… industry is more …………………in Europe than
in Asia where countries tend to have fewer, larger companies. Many naval vessels are built
or ……………… in shipyards owned or operated by the national government or navy. Shipyards
are …………………… near the sea or tidal rivers to allow easy access for their ships. The UK, for
example, has shipyards on many of its rivers. The site of a large shipyard will contain many
specialised cranes, dry docks, ……………., dust-free warehouses, painting facilities and
extremely large areas for fabrication of the ships. After a ship's useful life is over, it makes its
final voyage to a ………………… yard, often on a beach in South Asia. Historically shipbreaking
was carried on in ……………………. in developed countries, but high wages and environmental
regulations have resulted in movement of the industry to developing regions.

4. Read the text and find the synonyms for the words or expressions given.

The shipbuilding industry deals with the production of larger (mainly seagoing) vessels
intended for the merchant fleet (cargo or passenger transport), the off-shore energy
industry or military purposes. It also includes products and services supplied for the building,
conversion, and maintenance of these ships. The European Commission promotes the
industry’s development and addresses competitiveness issues it faces.

Importance of the shipbuilding sector

The European shipbuilding industry is a dynamic and competitive sector. It is important from
both an economic and social perspective. It is also linked to other sectors including
transport, security, energy, research, and the environment.

 There are about 150 large shipyards in Europe. Around 40 of them are active in the global
market for large seagoing commercial vessels;
 Some 120,000 people are employed by shipyards (civil and naval, new building, and repair
yards) in the EU;
 With a market share of around 6% in terms of tonnage and 35% for marine
equipment, Europe is a major player in the global shipbuilding industry (total turnover of
EUR 60 billion in 2012);

Shipbuilding is an important and strategic industry in a number of EU countries. Shipyards

contribute significantly to regional industrial infrastructure and national security interests
(military shipbuilding). The European shipbuilding industry is the global leader in the
construction of complex vessels, such as cruise ships, ferries, mega-yachts, and dredgers. It

5
also has a strong position in the building of submarines and other naval vessels. The
European marine equipment industry is a world leader for a wide range of products ranging
from propulsion systems, large diesel engines, environmental, and safety systems, to cargo
handling and electronics.
