ARTI 203 –TIPS AND NEW COMMANDS

Starting a drawing:
In AutoCAD, Choose:
File - New Select acad in the pop up box that offers templates to choose from

File - Saveas (find the folder you are working in; ARTI-203, save as ASSIGN#la_J. Doe.
Your file name should be: Assign# then the first letter of your first name and your last name
(i.e. Ass l a T. Boucher)
Setting UP the environment for your drawing:

(Format) Units— Lengths: Architectural - Precision 1/64"

Angles: Decimals - Precision 0.000

(Format) Drawing Limits - lower left 0,0: upper right 40', 30'.

You must follow Limits with a Zoom All. Z (enter) A (enter)

(Format) Layers - we do not need to add layers for this exercise; we will be using layer

0 which is always set for us when we open a new file. However, we will change
the colour of Layer O to COIOlJr No.30 in all our assignments.

(Layer Properties) Layer O — type in 30 in the COIOlJr bar (your lines should be orange from this point
on)

Commands for Assiqnment #1 a

Circle "center point and radius" or "center point and diameter"
Line — USUally using "Direct Distance"

PolyLine - draws a connected sequence of segments

Rectangle — USUally using "Relative Coordinates". Creates a Polyline
Offset — makes a copy of a line or Polyline at the distance specified from the
original
Trim — trims or cuts off a line at an intersecting "cutting edge"

Extend — extends or lengthens a line until it meets the "boundary edge"

Copy Object —with "Direct Distance"

Explode — breaks complex objects into simple objects, (i.e. turns a Rectangle
into 4 Lines)
Distance - inquiry toolbar. Use to measure your work as you go
Dtext - single line text
Tools and Settinqs for Assiqnment #1 a
Absolute Coordinates — indicate exact X,Y coordinates on the screen

Relative Coordinates — the symbol. Relative to the last chosen point

Direct Distance — typically with "Ortho" on. Move your cursor, (to specify direction), and

type a value (to specify distance)

Object Snaps, (OSNAPS) - snaps to specific precise locations on objects

Osmode - set "Osmode" to "4223" in all our exercises. Turns on the required

Object Snaps for our USe. Do this every class!

Steps and Information for Assiqnment #1 a

1 . Use the Rectangle command to set up a border around the area that you are going to draw the
objects in. The border is to be drawn as a rectangle; Start from (enter), then 40',30' (enter)

2. Use the Dtext command to put your name and Assignment number onto the drawing as
indicated. Pick a start point for your text, then enter the height, (9") as well as the rotation
angle, (0.000), then type as shown. YOU must make this as 2 separate lines of text. Don't worry
for now if they don't line up exactly

3. Use the Circle command to draw the circle with the given size

4. Use Line with "Direct Distance" or Rectangle with "Relative Coordinates" to draw the square and
rectangular pieces.

5. Use Rectangle with "Relative Coordinates" to draw the rectangles of the 3 window symbols.
Then use Copy Object with "Direct Distance" to copy these rectangles the set distance away.
Now draw a line using "0snap" from midpoint to midpoint
Note: Do not go over lines twice, each line that you see on the screen should only be a single continuous
line. Use the Distance command with "Osnap" turned on to measure your work to make sure it is
accurate

IMPORTANT:
When you are working on this file remember to save it to your hard drive every 5-10 minutes. You will
continue working on this assignment next class. It is not due to hand in for marking yet.

Tips and Tricks for Assiqnment #1 a

Offset command Use:
When activating this command, pay close attention to the command
line.
Initially it asks:
"Specify the Offset Distance" - Type a value here, i.e. 3, 4, 6 etc. then hit "enter" Next
it asks:

"Select an Object to Offset" - choose an object with your cursor pick box
Lastly it asks:
"Specify Point on Side to Offset" - If you pick above a horizontal object, the new copied object will
appear above. Choose below and it appears below. If working with a vertical object initially, the new
object appears on the right if you click right and on the left if you click left. Occasionally OSNAP
interferes with Offset. If you're having trouble, turn off OSNAP while you work with Offset. When
complete, hit "enter" to exit the command.

Offset command Tip:

When you are at the command prompt, enter brings up the last command. A good speed tip is to use
"enter/enter" to exit Offset yet return to "Specify Offset Distance" and continue working with a new
Offset VallJe!

Trim command Use:

When using the trim command, students quite often begin by clicking on objects they wish to trim. This
is incorrect.

Initially it asks:
"Select Cutting Edges" which are lines or objects which CUT or intersect the object you actually wish to
edit. Once the "Cutting Edges" have been established, hit "enter" to let AutoCAD know you are finished
choosing cutting edges.

Next it asks:

"Select Objects to trim" - choose the objects you want to trim away.

Extend command Use:

Extend is similar to Trim, students often forget to pay attention to the command line. AutoCAD wants to
know a boundary where to extend to First! Then what object to extend to that boundary.

It initially asks:
"Select Boundary Edges" — select where you want the object to extend to. Choose as many as you
need for what you are trying to do, hit "enter" to let AutoCAD know you are finished choosing
boundary edges.

Next it asks:

"Select object to extend" — select the objects you want to extend.

Trim / Extend command Tip:

When using either Trim or Extend you can skip the step about selecting Cutting or Boundary edges by
hitting the "enter" key. This tip will make everything on the screen a Cutting or Boundary edge. Now just
click on the objects you want to shorten or lengthen. Also, when using Trim or Extend in this manner,
YOU can hold the "shift" key to switch between Trim and Extend!
