Essay No. 1 – Answer the following question (200-300 words).

As briefly and clearly as possible please explain why you are applying to a particular program at
Nagoya University and how it is related to your academic history and your personal and
professional future goals.
Applicant’s Name: Md Shaheen Kabir

After completing my 10th grade, I was admitted into a reputed college in Bangladesh, where
I taught for 2 years and simultaneously pursued the Higher Secondary School Certificate (the
12th grade) with a major concentration in Science, especially in Biology and Mathematics.
Then, I started an internship on "Understanding Genome Sequence Techniques and
Interpreting Genomic Data" at a public university laboratory in Bangladesh to excel my
knowledge and skills in the practical application of biology. I want to follow up my studies in
Biology, concentrating on agricultural biotechnology and applied microbiology, and earn a
BSc degree from a prestigious institution with world-class professors and outstanding
learning opportunities, which the School of Agricultural Science provides.

My educational background matches with the qualifications sought for the proposed
bachelor's program named "Biological Sciences." While my previous education in Botany &
Zoology equipped me with adequate knowledge on Basic Biology, I am learning meticulously
about the process of Genome Sequence and Gene Editing from my current internship.
Alongside, I have basic knowledge of bioinformatics with special references to DNA splicing,
hypothesis testing and detection of mutations, and I am a confident user of statistical
analysis and text manipulation programming languages and softwares like R, Python, and
Perl. I am also currently enrolled in an online course by HarvardX in EdX called
"Bioconductor," which is enriching my programming skills related to biology. Furthermore, I
have participated in the national biology olympiad a couple times and achieved champion
rewards, which also encouraged me to study biology. The Biology Olympiad questions are all
research-based, which piqued my interest and encouraged me to get involved in the research
field. I've also begun the Aspire leadership program in January 2023, and I'm hoping that this
course will help me gain valuable experience in some really important areas such as
leadership and public speaking.

My ultimate goal is to achieve a Ph.D. degree from a top institution with marvelous academic
researchers and significant learning prospects and, thereafter, involve myself in the research
field and build a career in the research field. From the course syllabus and graduates, it is
evident that there is an agricultural biotechnology element in the proposed program.
Therefore, it is relevant to mention that my interest and current internship involve such
biotechnological properties. I am a high school graduate with some pre-university research
expertise, and I am confident that I can learn extensively as well as contribute to the diverse
and multidisciplinary environment of the School of Agricultural Sciences and the wider
university.

While the offered G30 program seeks an association of global cultural knowledge and
commitment to education, the School of Agricultural Sciences seeks students who are
global-minded and determined to eradicate agricultural difficulties through biological
knowledge, which best applied to me. Nagoya University’s distinct niche also encouraged me
to apply for this bachelor's program. This bachelor's position will undoubtedly give me the
perfect opportunity to fulfill my academic, professional, and personal goals.
