Hi. I’m Thomas and I’m learning about an amazing
bird. It’s called the ‘Bee Hummingbird’. It’s special
because it’s smaller than any other bird. It’s five
centimetres long – not much bigger than an insect.
Many people think it’s a bee when they see one. It
can move its wings very, very fast. I’ve got a book
here about hummingbirds and it says they move
their wings about twenty times a second! Amazing!
It’s so fast that our eyes can’t see the wings clearly.
These birds have bright colours, like blue, green
and red with a bit of grey and white. They usually
eat the juice from flowers. This is called ‘nectar’.
Let me spell it for you: N-E-C-T-A-R. In one day, a
hummingbird visits about 1,500 flowers! It probably
gets very hungry because it flies so fast. One last
thing – a hummingbird egg is the same size as a pea!

Sarah: Hi, Uncle Tim! Can you talk to me about
your job? It’s for my school project.
Tim: Of course.
Sarah: So, do you like your job?
Tim: Yes, I do! I love working in TV. I present a
show about endangered animals.
Sarah: How many hours do you work a day?
Tim: Oh, I usually work eight hours a day, but
sometimes I work at the weekend because
my show is every Sunday.
Sarah: What don’t you like about your job?
Tim: I often travel to faraway places to make
programmes about wild animals. I’ve got
children so it isn’t easy. I miss them a lot
when I’m not at home. But it’s important
that people learn about animals that are in
danger.

a boy?
Tim: Definitely not! When I was young, I didn’t
like watching TV. I didn’t go to the cinema
and I didn’t like film stars. I was more
interested in maths and physics. And my
father was a scientist, too.
Sarah: So was that your dream?
Tim: Yes, it was.
Sarah: OK, Uncle Tim. One more question.
Tim: Yes.
Sarah: Is your job difficult?
Tim: Not for me, no. I think there are other more
difficult jobs. For example, it’s harder to be
a politician or a chef, in my opinion.
Sarah: Great! Thanks, Uncle Tim.
Tim: So, what do you want to be when you’re
older, Sarah?
Sarah: Well. I don’t know yet.
