The Effectiveness of Music on Sleep Quality

Trends

Music is the form of art that combines sound and rhythm to create a functional

melodic line. It is a combination of vocal and instrumental sounds, sometimes both, that

expresses an idea through form, harmony, and emotional expression. Even music itself

transcends time, space, and cultural boundaries. Without using any words, music can

convey a mood. Additionally, it can be recorded in a written universal language that is

unlike any other form of art (Blakeley,S., Becker,R., & Przybyłek, S. 2021). According to

the researchers of Johns Hopkins Medicine, listening to music has been shown to

reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain, as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental

alertness, and memory.

According to Bollu, P., et al (2019), sleep is a state of unconsciousness in which

the brain is relatively more responsive to internal than external stimuli. The

predictable cycling of sleep and the reversal of relative external unresponsiveness are

features that assist in distinguishing sleep from other states of unconsciousness. Sleep

is an advanced biological process that enables processing new information,

maintaining health, and restoring the body. Our bodies require both sleep and

wakefulness to function properly; REM sleep and Non-REM sleep are two stages of

sleep that alternate several times each night. The functioning of your body's other

systems, including your metabolism and immune system, depends on sleep.

Additionally, sleep may enable the discharge of toxins from your brain that accumulate

while you are awake (NICHD, 2019).

Issues

What concerns the researcher about the variables is that listening to music has a

positive effect on the sleep quality of every individual. Music, as said in the preceding

description, helps us to lessen the possibility of anxiety, depression, memory and even

sleep quality. In addition to what has been said, the researcher wants to further discuss

the connection between the two variables and explore its effect on an individual.

Interestingly, a lot of research has been done and proven. Harmat, L., Takács, J.

and Bodizs, R. (2008), said that the quality of sleep is a key contributor to life

satisfaction. Fatigue, tiredness, depression, and issues with daytime functioning can all

be caused by sleep disorders. Music may improve sleep quality by relaxing muscles and

trying to divert attention from one's thoughts. It can also lower blood pressure, heart

rate, and other physiological measures of stress.

According to Dickson, T. (2021), trying to fall asleep can be stressful, but listening

to music makes the process more enjoyable. He advises including music in your

bedtime routine. According to him, making it a habit to listen to music for 45 minutes

before bed for about a month has been shown to improve sleep patterns.

Objectives

The objective of this research is to investigate the effects of listening to music to

improve sleep quality and to know if it is applicable to use in clinical settings.

Contribution

This research aims to contribute to the previous studies to further understand the

effects of music to improve sleep quality. It also aims to be a foundation for future

research in this field.

Statement of the Problem

This proposed research entitled, The Effectiveness of Music on Sleep Quality,

aims to find the significant effect of listening to music before the respondents

go to sleep.

Specifically, this seeks to answer the following questions:

1. Do the respondents listen to music before bed?

2. Can music help you fall asleep?

3. Does listening to music before sleeping have a significant effect on the

hours/ quality of sleep?

4. Why does music affect sleep?

5. What kind of music is best for sleep?

6. Can music intervention be used in a clinical setting?

Hypothesis

𝐻𝑜= Listening to music before sleeping has a positive effect on the quality

of sleep.
