SCH4U Mini Assignment: Lewis Diagrams and Hybridization Due Date: ____________________

The intention of this assignment is to make a connection between the arrangement of electrons in a compound and its three dimensional
molecular geometry. This in turn can be used to predict how a particular chemical will behave. Using your knowledge of electron
configuration, Lewis diagrams and the VSEPR model complete the table given below for the compound(s) you have been assigned.

Substance Lewis Diagram (indicate Electron 3D (Show bonds and bond Molecular Hybridization of the central atom using orbital

1. Urea, CO(NH2)2 is a compound formed in the liver, it is one of the ways humans excrete nitrogen as waste. The Lewis structure for ureas is
as follows. Using hybrid orbitals for carbon, nitrogen and oxygen, illustrate the orbital overlap to form the various bonds in urea. Label each
hybridized orbital in your diagram. You must consider hybridization for the C, O and N atoms. An example of such a diagram is shown
below but for methane. [5 marks Application]

2. Illustrate the hybridized orbitals around______________________________________. Your diagram should show the p orbitals involved
in the double bond as well. [5 marks Application]
