CHEMICAL BONDING
Name: Class: Date:
1. Sodium borohydride, NaBH4, usually encountered as as a powder, is a reducing agent that finds
application in chemistry, both in the laboratory and on an industrial scale. It has been tested as
pretreatment for pulping of wood, but is too costly to be commercialized.
[2]
b. The bonding between sodium and borohydride ion is ionic bond. Draw the Lewis structure of
the ionic bonding between sodium ion and borohydride ion.

2. Another sulfur compound which is present in the Earth’s atmosphere is carbonyl sulfide, OCS. The
sequence of atoms in the molecule is oxygen-carbon-sulfur.

d. Show, and clearly label the σ and 𝜋 bonds on the OCS molecule.

3. Molecules are attracted to each other by weak intermolecular forces. There are three types of
molecular force;
• Induced dipole force (Van der Waals)
• Permanent dipole force
• Hydrogen bonding
For each group of molecules below, identify the strongest type of intermolecular force present in
each molecule (1 mark) and then use this information to order the molecules according to their
boiling point, from lowest to highest (1 mark). Explain your answer (1 mark).

a. Draw Lewis structure to show the arrangement of outer electrons present in a formula unit of
Mg2Si. Assume magnesium silicide is an ionic compound.
[2]
b. When solid Mg2Si is added to water, silane gas, SiH4, and a solution of magnesium hydroxide
are produced.
Suggest, with reference to structure and bonding, why SiH4 is a gas at room temperature.

silicon.
