UNIT-I

5. a) In electronic spectrum of Ti  H 2O 6  shows a broad band having peak at 20,100 cm-1 and
shoulder at 17400 cm-1. Assign the ligand field transition for both the peak and the shoulder for
H2O as ligand. [3]

b) For the complex  Mn  H 2O 6  , the mean pairing energy (p) is found to be 28,800 cm-1. The
magnitude of 10Dq  or  is 21000 cm-1. Calculate the CFSE for the complex corresponding to
high spin and low spin state. [2]
6. a) Comment on the following magnetic moments : (a) K3 CoF6  has   4.2BM but K3 CuF6  has
2.8 B.M and K 2  NiF6  is diamagnetic. [3]
b) What is meant by the symbol 3F? Show that it represents a total degeneracy (orbital plus spin) of

7. a) Using MO theory, explain how is  -value influenced by (i) ligands; acting as  -donor and (ii)

b) Explain the term 'nephelauxtic effect'. Iodide ion is more nephelauxitic than CN- - Why? [2]

8. The greenish blue aqueous solution of  Ni  H 2O 6  show the absorption peaks at
wavenumbers 8700 cm-1,14500 cm-1 and 25300 cm-1. Assign the bonds in Orgel diagram and
hence estimate the value of 10 Dq of the complex. [3+2]
9. a) Though the d-d transition is Lapste-forlidden yet some colour of weak intensity is found in
Centro symmetric molecules –why? [2]

c) In which form arsenic is more toxic and why. [2]
d) What is Rubredoxine? Explain the colour of its oxidised and reduced form. [1+2]
