ABSTRACT

Diffusion of sodium chloride refers to the movement of sodium and chloride ions from an area of high
concentration to an area of low concentration, driven by the random motion of particles. The objectives of
this experiment is to study the diffusion coefficients and to determine mass transfer rate without convective
effects. At the start of the experiment 100mL 3M Nacl was prepared. The standard curve was created for
NaCl concentrations of 0.001, 0.0012, 0.0014, 0.0016, 0.0018, and 0.002M. It was discovered how many
round plate capillaries there were in the J-tube. The J-tube's upper end was clamped to the container. The J-
tube was filled with NaCl solution up it reach the top of capillaries. The digital conductivity metre was
connected to the cable. The test vessel was filled with 1000 mL of water until the capillary top was covered.
The magnetic stirrer was then switched on after that. Every five minutes, a stopwatch was set, and the
conductivity value was measured over the period of 40 minutes. All of the glassware was taken after the
experiment and washed in water. NaCl solution from slope has a liquid diffusivity of 2.6752 108m2 /s.
According to the Wilke Chang Equation, the liquid diffusivity of NaCl is 1.665 10-9 m2. In conclusion,
there is a 15% difference between actual and theoretical values. The amount of NaCl that diffuses in water
was determined. When the computed measured value obtained was compared to a reference value, a
significant difference between the two values was found.

2. According to the concentration versus conductivity graph. As conductivity is directly proportional to

concentration, the pattern was intended to be the same as conductivity vs. time. The conductivity of an
electrolyte, like as water, depends on the amount of tonnes in the solution. A solution's conductivity rises along
with its concentration. Using both plots, one may estimate the slope value.

CONCLUSIONS

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the diffusion coefficients of NaCl in water
solvent and to calculate the mass transfer rate of sodium chloride solute in water without
considering convective effects. Based on the result, we can see that the conductivity of sodium
chloride increases as the time increases due to the sodium atoms and chlorine atoms separate
when sodium chloride dissolves in water due to the influence of the water molecules. They are
free to move as positively and negatively charged ions in the water. This charge separation
enables the solution to conduct electricity. This reaction can be received after 1000ml of
deionised water poured into the test vessel. This experiment was conduct to perfection as there
were no errors happened such as air bubbles trap in the capillaries on the day of the experiment.
The objective of this experiment is achieved as we managed to get the results of conductivity
and managed to determined the liquid diffusivity of sodium chloride based on the slope of
