UNIT- I [13]

1. a) Explain the following facts: [2 + 2]


i) The shortness of B-X bond length of BX3 decreases for X = F to I.
ii) Aqueous solution of borax functions as basic buffer (pH = 9.18).
b) Write the reaction product(s) when anhydrous AlCl3 will be added separately with i) CsCl and
ii) SbCl5 in O=PCl3 solvent. [2]
c) Compare the hydrolytic products of AsCl5 with that of SbCl5 including justification. [3]

d) What are condensed phosphates? What are the building units? How are they distinguished?
Which one of the condensed phosphates is used in detergent powders and why? [4]
2. a) Which one of the following conversions will be taken place and why? [2]
2N2(g) → N4 and 2P2(g) → P4

OR,
The P(OH)3 → P(O)(H)(OH)2 conversion is exoergic – why?
b) BH3 but not PH3 dimerizes readily. Explain [2]

d) How will you establish the following facts: (i) stability of arsine is greater than stibine, (ii) GaCl 2

3. a) Justify the differences between N(CH3)3 and N(SiH3)3 in the light of shape and their reactions
separately with muriatic acid. [4]
b) Write down the hydrolytic products of RnSiX4-n when n = 1, 2 and 3. [3]
c) Complete the reactions with balancing (ion-electron method): [3]

7. a) How can you obtained the concept of nuclear binding energy per nucleon from mass defect

b) How can you justify –
i) Two sulphur (S) atoms in thiosulphate are not equivalent.
ii) All ‘I’ in HgI42- are equivalent. [2+2]

c) What is nuclear spallation reaction? Give an example. What are the basic differences between
nuclear fission and nuclear spallation reaction? [2+2]
8. a) Explain the nuclear stability in terms of –
i) odd-even nature. [2.5]
ii) Nuclear forces. [2.5]

b) What do you mean by magic number? Why they are so called? How can you obtain the concept
of magic number from nuclear binding energy vs mass number plot? Explain the significance of
