b) Mention four major limitations of Bohr's theory.

c) Uncertainty in position of an electron is 1nm. Calculate its uncertainty in velocity.

d) How will you arrive at the relationship qp = qv + ΔngRT?

e) Explain Pauli's exclusion principle.

f) Which member of the alkaline earth metals family has

(i) least reactivity, (ii) lowest density, (iii) highest boiling point, (iv) maximum
reduction potential?

g) List three properties of Lithium in which it differs from the rest of the alkali metals.

h) Use molecular orbital theory to explain why the Be2 molecule does not exist.

i) Define oxidizing and reducing agent.

j) Arrange the following in order of increasing oxidation number of Mn:

MnCl2, MnO2, Mn(OH)3, KMnO4

k) Statues coated with white lead on long exposure to the atmosphere turn black and the
original colour can be restored on treatment with H2O2. Why? Explain with proper
reaction.

l) The boiling point of H2O is higher than that of H2S. Explain.

3. Answer any nine questions : 3×9=27

a) What do you mean by dual nature of matter? Show that de-" Broglie's wave length is
inversely proportional to the velocity of the particle. 1+2=3

b) What is quantum number? Which quantum numbers are associated with shape and
orientation of orbitals? 1+2=3

c) Describe the hybridisation in case of PCl5. Why are the axial bonds longer as
compared to equatorial bonds?? 3

d) Hydrogen forms how many types of bonds in its. Describe each type of bonding using
suitable example. 3

e) Is it possible to store:
(i) Copper sulphate solution in a zinc vessel. (ii) Copper sulphate solution in silver
vessel. 3

f) Show that for an ideal gas Cp- Cv = R 3

g) Show how hydrogen peroxide can function both as an oxidising and a reducing agent.
3 3
h) Describe the important properties of cathode-rays. What is concluded about the
nature of these rays? 3

i) The reactant which is entirely consumed in reaction is known as limiting reagent. In

the reaction 2A + 4B —> 3C + 4D, when 5 moles of A react with 6 moles of B, then
(i) which is the limiting reagent?
(ii) calculate the amount of C formed. 3
j) What designations are given to the orbitals having
(i) n = 2, l = 1 (ii) n = 2, l = 0 (iii) n = 4, l = 3 (iv) n = 4, l = 2 (v) n = 4, l = 1
k) When 4.2 g of NaHCO3 is added to a solution of acetic acid (CH3COOH) weighing
10.0 g, it is observed that 2.2 g of CO2 is released into the atmosphere. The residue
left behind is found to weigh 12.0 g. Show that these observations are in agreement
with the law of conservation of mass.

4. Answer any three Questions: 3×5=15

a) Explain why CO22– ion cannot be represented by a single Lewis structure. How
can it be best represented? Write MOT diagram of O2. 1+2+2=5

b) Whenever a reaction between an oxidising agent and a reducing agent is carried out, a
compound of lower oxidation state is formed if the reducing agent is in excess and a
compound of higher oxidation state is formed if oxidising agent is in excess. Justify this
statement giving three illustrations. 5

c) Beryllium and magnesium do not give colour to flame whereas other alkaline earth metals
do so. Why? What happens when
(i) Sodium metal is dropped in water?
(ii) Sodium metal is heated in free supply of air?
(iii) Sodium peroxide dissolves in water? 2+3=5

d) Which fundamental property of an atom is not understood if we assume that an atom
