(Theory)
Half-Yearly Examination
HS 1st Year
Full Marks: 70 Time: Three Hours
General Instructions:
(i) Question 1 is compulsory.
(ii) From Question 2, answer any ten.
(iii) From Question 3, answer any nine.
(iv) From Question 4, answer any three.
a) Calculate the wave length of the second line of Lyman series in hydrogen spectra
(Given RH = 1.09737 cm-1).
g) List three properties of Lithium in which it differs from the rest of the alkali metals.
h) Use molecular orbital theory to explain why the Be2 molecule does not exist.
k) Statues coated with white lead on long exposure to the atmosphere turn black and the
original colour can be restored on treatment with H2O2. Why? Explain with proper
reaction.
a) What do you mean by dual nature of matter? Show that de-" Broglie's wave length is
inversely proportional to the velocity of the particle. 1+2=3
b) What is quantum number? Which quantum numbers are associated with shape and
orientation of orbitals? 1+2=3
c) Describe the hybridisation in case of PCl5. Why are the axial bonds longer as
compared to equatorial bonds?? 3
d) Hydrogen forms how many types of bonds in its. Describe each type of bonding using
suitable example. 3
e) Is it possible to store:
(i) Copper sulphate solution in a zinc vessel. (ii) Copper sulphate solution in silver
vessel. 3
g) Show how hydrogen peroxide can function both as an oxidising and a reducing agent.
3 3
h) Describe the important properties of cathode-rays. What is concluded about the
nature of these rays? 3
a) Explain why CO22– ion cannot be represented by a single Lewis structure. How
can it be best represented? Write MOT diagram of O2. 1+2+2=5
b) Whenever a reaction between an oxidising agent and a reducing agent is carried out, a
compound of lower oxidation state is formed if the reducing agent is in excess and a
compound of higher oxidation state is formed if oxidising agent is in excess. Justify this
statement giving three illustrations. 5
c) Beryllium and magnesium do not give colour to flame whereas other alkaline earth metals
do so. Why? What happens when
(i) Sodium metal is dropped in water?
(ii) Sodium metal is heated in free supply of air?
(iii) Sodium peroxide dissolves in water? 2+3=5
