Dear Parents of ELA 20-1/-2 students,

On our most recent essay assignment, student results were less consistent than we would like them to be at
this stage in the course. To support the development of critical writing skills, we would like to offer an
additional opportunity for students who wish to improve their skills and scores on this assignment.

If your child would like to use the feedback provided on the most recent essay to target specific skills and
demonstrate improvement in an essay, they may be eligible for a rewrite. If they score higher on the rewrite,
the higher score will replace the previous score in PowerSchool.

To apply to write an essay to earn a higher score, the student must request and complete the provided
planning document showing which skills they would improve in a rewrite and submit it to their ELA teacher by
12:00 noon on Monday, March 6 for review.

With the teacher’s approval, the student may then attend a supervised eighty-minute writing session on
Tuesday, March 7 from 3:10-4:30 pm. During this time, the student will be provided with a prompt on a
familiar text and will write and submit their essay.

If the student achieves a higher score on this essay, it will replace their mark on the last essay written in class.
If they do not achieve a higher score, their previous mark will remain in PowerSchool.

If you would like more information regarding this opportunity, please contact your child’s ELA 20 teacher at
the email below.

We thank you for your continued support.

Respectfully,

The ELA 20 Team
