UNIT 5: LEXICAL RELATIONS

Exercise 1: Look at the following pairs of synonyms. For each pair, (a) give a sentence
in which the two words could be used interchangeably without altering the sense of the
sentence; (b) give another sentence using one of the words where a different sense is
involved. The first one has been done as an example for you.

Exercise 1: Are the following pairs of words binary antonyms?


1. Chalk – cheese 4. Dead – alive
2. Same – different 5. Married – unmarried
3. Copper – tin 6. Cheap – expensive

Exercise 2: Are the following pairs of words relational antonyms?


1. Below – above 4. Grandparent – grandchildren
2. Love – hate 5. Greater than – less than
3. Conceal – reveal 6. Own – belong to

Exercise 3: Identify the continuous scale of values between the two given words.
1. Love – hate
2. Hot – cold
3. Big – small
4. Rich – poor
5. None – all
6. Possibly – certainly
7. Never – always

Exercise 4: State whether the following pairs of antonyms are binary, gradable or
relational by writing B (binary), G (gradable) or R (relational):

Exercise 5: Give the phonetic transcription shared by two members of each of the
given pairs of words to identify them as a pair of homophones. The first one is done as
an example.
